Ant McPartlin or Declan Donnelly?

I don't "hold" as such for the farrier, but either myself of my mum is nearly always there (apart from if we can't and have cleared it with farrier, or the time farrier forgot to tell us he was coming early!). YO is almost always around too, so there will 99.9% of the time be someone on-hand.
However as the vet is not usual routine (apart from vaccs, but it's not realy routine if it's once a year!) then there will 100% always be either me or my mum there for the vet, holding the horse. Especially if it's a problem that is being investigated.
TBH I get on well with my farrier and feel I know him well enough, and he has said he is happy to get her out of her stable and get on with shoeing her if we're late or even if we can't be there. The vet is another matter, as I don't have a regular vet (just anyone from the practice who is available) and so don't know them as well.

I don't hold any of my horses when the farrier comes. 1. Because all of my horses stand like rocks 2. The farriers even come when i'm not at home. The only time i've held a horse was for my youngster as he'd never had the farrier before, once he got used to it i stopped.

Of course when they come i'll go and tie the horses up (if im at home) chat to the farriers and then go and make them a drink and then get on with my jobs.

I don't generally hold them either when the vet comes i'll trot them up but thats about it.

yes & yes

Have always held horse for vet or farrier (or had someone else do so whilst horses were at livery). However, must say that OH doesn't mind doing some customers' horses whilst tied, and in the case of some owners it is better that they don't hold them as they wind the horse up

No, I tie up for the farrier but always stand next to the horse whilst its being done or make a cup of coffee for him. I hold for the vet as normally something needs doing and neither of mine are that keen on the vet - poor man!

All the horses here are absolutely perfect with the farrier. They all stand quietly when tied up and never ever fidget (that is something which I don't tolerate in my horses). However I always hold my horses for the farrier - common courtesy in my book! I also hold all horses for the vet - again common courtesy.

Once the farrier and I have finished outside, he comes in for a cup of coffee and lunch. The vet also comes in for coffee and if it is lunchtime when he is here then I make him lunch.

Generally the farrier is here for 3 hours and then comes into the house for about an hour. The vet does whatever needs doing and then he comes into the house and generally stays for a couple of hours to chat.

I always stand with my horses for the vet and the farrier. I have a good relationship with the farrier and enjoy his chats and make coffee for him continually throughout his visit. He's a smashing lad and I find him being here quite social as well as business.

I would never not be in attendance when I had the vet to my horse, so clearly I'm always there to hold them. If I have a problem with the horse I'd want to explain that fully to my vet as well as hear first hand his thoughts and diagnosis.

You know I had problems with Patches standing for the farrier and having her feet picked up when I first had her. She was a nightmare to shoe. It didn't take long though for her to become accustomed to the hot shoeing process and with sympathetic, yet firm, handling she stands like a dream now.

Proof!

Calm as anything! She used to rear when he did the front of her hoof walls!

I must admit mine are usually tied for the farrier but I am always stood at their head unless he sends me off to make a brew!

I would never go into the stable building or the house whilst he's doing them and leave him to it (unless as I say he sends me in for the coffee re-fill)

Yes and Yes - my horse is an angel for both, however i feel it is only courtesy, and also in the interest of safety for me to be there. after all, all horses can be unpredictable - no matter how well they usually behave.

the blacksmiths would have a fit if you held the horse here. They are all cross tied and stand quietly (most of them anyway!). If there is a problem horse, then yes, he'll be held. For the vet , oh holds and I follow the vet in what he's doing and saying. Mairi.

Yes and yes. Out of respect for the farrier and because I like to know what he is doing and see if there are any problems. I also am good friends with my farrier and enjoy talking to him. Always for vet for obvious reasons.

I dont hold my horses for the farrier. The farrier always has an apprentice with him and is more than happy just to get on with it! All 3 of my horses are totally fine anyway.

I would always be there nd wold hold for the vet though.

Farrier No, as he is my sisters husband and lives on the farm where the horses are. Vet yes as they only come out to jab them - touch wood. So once a year is fine. But if it was something else I would want to ask questions.

No to the farrier as both of mine are good & to be honest he'd sooner I kept making cups of tea! However I'll always be around & if it's a different farrier I'll always hold Jim as he can be a bit wary of strangers.

I always hold for the vet. Not really a matter of respect, more because they tend to do things that horses aren't keen on & may react badly to.

No for farrier- not out of lack or respect, i always used to but he said if i wanted to be doing jobs at the same time that's fine. However i or someone else will always be present and nearby.

Vet yes always as i like to talk to them about different things whereas with the farrier i will tell him what i want doing at the start and how feet were at the end. Also as farrier is normally more regular i think he knows the horse better.

Yes and yes, although two of mine will happily tie up for the farrier, but even then I am close by and will hold them if they fidget at all. My farrier is a superstar though and would happily go above and beyond what is required. I am very careful not to take advantage of that.

Yes to vet, no to farrier

I work Monday to Friday and so can't be there when the farrier comes. If your horse isn't difficult and the farrier knows you aren't going to be there I don't see how you can think its rude. I leave her in the stable with the cash outside and she has new shoes in the evening.

If you are lucky enough to be able to spend yourday with your horse then thats lovely for you but don't judge people who can't

Don't hold Hattie for the farrier but stand with Gyp as he will try to eat the farrier. Hold for the vet as want to know whats going on and make it easier for the vet.

Nobody holds Marius for the farrier, because he stands tied up as good as gold.
The vet, well, yes, usually he will have a headcollar on and will be held loosly, because that's what the vet wants, not because Marius needs it.
The dentist, however, doesn't even put the gag thing in to work, as Marius hates being restrained and will stand with his mouth open fine, but not when he is made to.

QR

we usually greet and get the horses up and settled with hay and make sure they are happy...they both stand very well for the farrier, and we normaly tidy up the yard or just opo in and out to check they are ok..in the summer when the flys are around we stay all the time with them.

Absolutely!!
Thats is what i would deem the most sensible and responsible thing to do!
1. Safety for horse and farrier.
2. Safety for horse and Vet.
I hold my friends horses for both as she doesn't see why she should which personally i think is irresponsible.
They are my horses, my responsiblity

Havent read, but no and yes, tho if I am around that would be yes and yes - farrier is fantastic but notoriously bad at keeping time - if he calls me to say he is there and I am around then I go chat to him, if not then no bother - vet, I would have called them out so will always be there

Thank you everyone for voting. Most interesting results; slightly more of us are with our horses when the farrier is here and the vast majority are with their horses when the vet visits.

Yes and yes, even though my horse is good to shoe I still make sure I'm there, I make a cup of tea for the farrier, and his apprentice and stand and hold my horse. I like to check he's got road nails in, but I would do it anyway, I just think if I can be there I should be there, not leave it to someone else or the farrier.

I always hold for the vet - or have someone else hold them. But virtually never hold for the farier. All 4 are tied up on the yard and the farrier does them, along with his apprentice whilst tied up. I sweep up and make the tea - assuming I'm even there though I would be fairly happy to let him do them with noone there.
