I am not normally there for the farrier but if I am then Bert is tied up and I stand at head and take it as an opportunity to fuss him more! He does stand like a saint now which is a big improvement from when I first got him, also likes to doze off on new farrier which I can only put down to his aftershave as they all seem to do it.
Same for the vet, tie him up unless trotting up etc but always standing at his head.
I don't respect either one more than the other as IMO both are highly skilled professions.
There is always someone on the yard for the farrier, but no I wont stand holding him, as there isno need. If the farrier is concerned, he wil tell me, and thats that! Have just got new farrier, so was there when he shod, but only held horse when was rasping front feet so he didnt get squidged agaist wall! Last time vet came for Vaccs, someone was teher, but vet was happy to go in and do him without being held.
Unfortunatly, upto a week ago i was temping, so couldnt afford the time off. Hopefully now things will improve, but its not the end of the world if not, I know the people that deal with my horse well enough to trust that there will be no probs just cos i'm not there.
I am around for the vet and will generally hold him but I get my horse in for my farrier and if i have to go then he will turn out and lock up for me !!
Hes a nice man.....a very very nice man !!
I think its completely astonishing that anyone would consider it rude not to hold the horse for the farrier or the vet. My OH is a farrier he often goes into fields to shoe horses he catches them himself and ties them to the gate without anyones assistance. He actually prefers it when people arent standing holding the horse and watching him they seem to expect him to make small talk and shoeing is hard enough work without trying to make conversation as well. Plus he does the horses in some of the most famous stable yards in Ireland and he is given a list of horses to shoe with their stable numbers and just gets on with it even top class showjumpers dont bother getting their horses held to get shoes done! Like GTs said you should trust the farrier to just get on with it thats what you are paying him for.
My vet keeps her horse on the same yard as me if i need something done she will do it while she is in the yard if its something important of course i would be there but out of concern and wanting to hear what she said. For routine stuff she will just do it with or without me there- keeping horses is expensive enough i couldnt afford to take time off work everytime my horses needed something minor like shoeing or vaccs done.
Also just to point out that my OH drives on average 120 miles per day visiting at least 8 yards he prefers to get in and get things over and done with, he hates it when he gets delayed by what he calls "gossipy yard owners" trying to give him tea and lunch when he is in a rush to get to the next yard.
I voted yes for the vet (our vets insist I think, but would always be there for that anyway)
Farrier - I voted yes, but to be honest, when my mare was shod I was rarely around (work time), my sister did her, but our farrier preferred you not to hold them and liked them tied up and left to get on with it. Now my mare is trimmed by an EP and I always hold her, as he is much friendlier and nicer to chat to!! However, now he knows her, I believe he would be happy to do her unattended.
I think its horses for courses - its not always easy to "be around" for the farrier if you work full time, because most of the ones I have had want to come in work time. I'm lucky in that my sister can sometimes fill in, but not always, so what are you supposed to do if you are at work and the farrier won't come any other time? Its OK for people whose work is their yards or at home, as they can fit jobs in around farrier visits - not so easy when you work full time and are 8 miles away!
I'm always there for either, but don't hold for farrier, do for the vet for three of mine, they are needle shy, had bad experience with a rather nervous vet once and that has troubled them since......... other girlie is a star......
Horses are usually tied up to be shod, but one or both of us is always in the yard - wouldn't just leave farrier to get on with it, although he would be quite happy to do to as he used to own Toffee!
You hve to be there for the vet as you need to know what he is going to say anyway.
If my horse needs to see the vet then it is assumed that he is either injured or having vaccinations..both these I and the vet consider it necessary for me to be there to be with my horse, calm him and of course have the silly passport ready to be stamped.
My farrier and his lads are fantastic, I get texts if he is late, even by a few minutes and he will often come to find me (big DIY yard) if he knows he is due shoes, he also texts/rings to tell me to leave him in for them. I do not consider it disrespectful to not hold my horse, he is quiet and I do not have the convenience of always being there. They always come to pet him regardless whether they are shoeing him or not. If I am around I just sit with them or get on with my jobs because they tell me to!
Essentially I do whatever the professionals (vet, farrier etc)tell me to do, and that is respecting them.

Seems I may be in the minority then. Every single horse I have is perfect for the farrier, even the little weanlings.....however I hold my horses out of respect and courtesy to my farrier.
So, it seems that everyone holds their horse for the vet......so why do you hold your horse for the vet and not for the farrier? Do you respect your vet more than your farrier?
[/ QUOTE ]
Nothing to do with respect, just practicality - I tie mine up and leave them with the farrier but I'm always within earshot if he needs me to come hold them.
I always hold them for the vet - the youngster is needle-shy and if it's an injury quite often the owner can be helpful to the vet - holding things or distracting the horse.

Yep nothing what so ever to do with respect. If its the vet it is either injections and you wouldn't get a needle in my mare without holding her or an injury/illness, in which case OF COURSE I am going to be there!
Farrier/trimming is routine, therefore not essential for the owner to be there as long as you respect and trust your professional and most importantly THEY are happy without you being there. I would always respect completely the wishes of my farrier/trimmer if they required me to be on hand/hold the horse, but if they are happy to work without assistance, then why should I worry - they obviously don't see it as lack of respect or bad ownership!
