Quick question? Can you show a horse with windgalls?

Depends where the windgall is, how big they are and how obvious they are. Also do you plan on showing at local level or affiliated? What classes do you plan on doing?

Technically you should get marked down for windgalls, after all they are a blemish so at the higher level they are not ideal. However I have a friend who works for a well known showing person and a lot of their horses (many of which go to HOYS year after year) have windgalls, some of them huge.

Generally they don't cause lameness, but they are a sign of wear and tear and should be kept an eye on. My horse developed a couple 6 years ago, but they developed in to something more sinister and he's just had sugery on one.

Yes, just be aware you may be penalised for them. Unless it's veterans or (I believe) ex-racers, in which case they won't be taken into account.

They may lead to nothing more than arthritis setting in slightly ealier than it may normally. They can also be drained but that's kinda pointless as they come back soon enough anyway. I've never known a horse to have more surgery than draining done.

Sorry i didn't make it clear, it wasn't the actual windgall that required surgery. Last year the windgall became larger and firm and he eventually went lame on it. A scan revealed that the tendon sheath was very inflamed and the annular ligament was constricting it and so it had to be cut. I think its called an annular ligament desmotomy?

As I said before the windgalls themselves tend not to be a problem but they can be a sign of an underlying issue.
