Getting a new bridle for pony, he's a dainty 15.3hh - 16hh at a push, he has a small head... Takes a 5 inch bit. Do you think he needs Cob or Full?

I'm afraid I couldn't guess but my lad is only just 15hh and takes a cob cheekpiece but a full nose and browband just because he has a fat head and is akward

Will your local saddlers let you try a bridle and replace for a bigger/smaller size if it doesn't fit and returned in the same condition?

Possibly, but local tack shop doesn't really have any selection, just black or havana!! So I'm doing the dreaded internet shop :S

My mare is similar sized with a dainty head and she has a cob sized Kieffer bridle. Makes do vary size wise, but she's never needed bigger than cob size and I can use my other horses (arabs so very dinky heads) pony size headcollars on her.

What is it you're looking for?
Dare I suggest a cheeky buy of a bridle to check size and then take it back to the shop and say it doesn't fit... then go online and get what you need... is that really bad :o

If as you say hes got a small head I would think he would be a cob. My fairly chunky 16hh ISH and 16.3hh WB/ISH both fit cob sizes - they are only just right on the nose but I find the cheek pieces far too long on the fulls. Its difficult to judge though I had a 16.3hh TB with a head I'd call dainty but because his head was also long he needed full cheeks and cob nose.

You can buy cob cheekpieces from most saddlers (as oposed to just tack shop retailers); this is what I do for mine that needs full size nose and brow.

As someone else has said, it depends on the brand... My cob is normally top of a cob/bottom of a full. Bought a Collegiate noseband in full, and it didn't even meet!

Got him a full Collegiate bridle and it just goes on with a hole or two to spare...
