Having just checked his passport, my chestnut horse is due his flu jab tomorrow (EEK, not normally disorganised about this!) and I haven't organised to have it done. Is there a window period after 1 year where you can just have the booster without having to have the first course all over again or do I need to call in a major favour to get it done?!!!

I have googled this but can't seem to find sensible advice easily so thought maybe someone knowledgeable here might know!

Thanks :)

My new horse was supposed to be done the end of december but she wasn't. I just got her 2 weeks ago. Had the vet out to see my other horse and restart her vaccs, she said she would still be covered but wouldn't be competition legal, I chose to restart her as I don't know what I'll be doing with her in the future and also my other horse is getting treatment so probably won't need a seperate visit just to do 2nd injection.

It has to be bang on the same day. Trust me I had this issue last month, new horse and passport was still with his old owner, she phoned me Friday lunch time to say we’d got the chart wrong and he needed it doing… THAT DAY! He was actually booked in for the next Friday but vets said they’d have to re-do the course and they’d be struck off for back dating.

Luckily I managed to get a different practice to come out and give him his jab at 5pm on a Friday, since then I’ve changed to that practice as they went above and beyond to fit me in where as my own vets were indifferent to the situation. Luckily any practice can come out and do it for you (as a cash sale) if you have passport.

and i think - well riding club anyway - that if you have ever missed jabs in past cant compete - even if up to date now - they getting very strict.

Annual Boosters may be given on the same date each year, but this is not
recommended.

from the BRC rulebook as thats the one I can find quickly ;)

kezimac, its fine if you restart, 'up to date' means from the start, whenever the start was!

I has this problem, flu and tet was going to be eactly 6 months after the 2nd jab (starting as he's a baby) but this was no good for competing, luckily managed to get him done a week earlier. However, I have a question (hope you don't mind me asking on this thread!!)

My vet only gave my boy a tet jab, said he didn't need the flu one... Is this right? He was first jabbed at the start of July, flu and tet, then 6 weeks later the same, and I thought you were meant to have both again after 6 months??

Sure that can't be right?! YOu mean to say that if a horse 10 years ago missed a jab but has been restarted thru the jab protocol and is current then they are doomed forever to never compete? Surely not....

Think some BRC area vac checking ppl need to recheck rules cos some of our guys werent allowed to compete as they had previously missed vacs but had restarted and were up date!!!

well thats what i thought but I think it may be like ester says ok if restarted - Think its some riding clubs who have to send helpers to area arent reading rules - we have had competitors not allowed to compete cos of vac records

the full rule if it helps kezimac is this :

Primary Vaccination Two injections, the 2nd between 21 and 92 days after the
1st
First Booster An injection between 150 and 215 days after 2nd primary
injection
Annual Booster An injection not more than 1 year after the preceding
injection
None of the vaccinations may be given within the preceding 7 days including the day
of competition or entry into the competition stables.
Only the first two injections need to have been given before the horse/pony may
compete..
Annual Boosters may be given on the same date each year, but this is not
recommended.

its different for quadrille that is 6 monthly

From experience it is a nightmare checking vacs of old horses and those that have restarted several times!

I didn't know that it had to be so exact. I presume this is just for competition? When we got Belle, her passport said due 'March '10' so we got her flu jab done today and the vet was fine with that. I never knew it could be so specific. Perhaps it's lucky that we have no competition plans for Belle! :)

I've always been told by vets it has to be one year LESS one day since the last booster; having a jab on the same day a year later is too late for racecourses/riding club and the like.

Have checked his passport and he's had it done on the same day several times and he's an ex-racer so not an issue!
