I don't hunt, but I am looking for a horse.
Seen a really nice one, went to veiw it and he was really sweet.
The owners said he had been whipped in hunting.
Can someone explain to me what 'whipped in' means please?

sorry for potential numptiness.

The whipper in is one of the people who helps the huntsman keep hounds under control and together. So their horses have to be obedient and adaptable and jump pretty much anything they are asked to. So if he was a good whip's horse he should be ok!

Iam going to go against the grain now- yes a whips horse would be very experienced but also will of had a hell of alot of work, might have soundness issues.
Also as the whip is off on their own/up front etc, he may not settle well in the field, not all, but alot of hunt servants horses are so because they are strong or sharp in the field and like a job up front.
Just my opinion though, you should be able to find a hunter easily at this time of the year.

Hmm, I'm not looking for a hunter. But on his description it said he had been whipped in.
So I guess he is obedient, used to dogs and good in open spaces?

Thanks all :)

I'd say it's ceertainly wouldn't put me off ringing about a horse... just be sure to ask about soundness, was he good at the job, and was he ever hunted as part of the field followers (and what was he like?).

best of luck with the horse hunting!

Yep - he should be obedient - and a good jumper. Dogs shouldn't worry him, and he certainly shouldn't be nappy about leaving other horses and going off on his own.]

He MIGHT not necessarily be good in a group of horses, and he WILL have worked hard! But as others have said, this relies on him having been a GOOD whipper-in's horse!:D
