I've only just managed to grab computer (and remembered to post)

A lass is coming to try little ned for part-loan today. What questions should i be asking, and looking for? I already know her 'experience' history, so I suppose enquire into that more.

if she has public liability i always ask to see if they have it , more about her riding experience and knowledge of horses, payment mthods etc

What does she plan on doing with him? Watch her ride and make sure you like how she handles him and treats him.
And sort out before the loan starts exactly what she does with him regarding stable chores and what she pays for

Should I tack him up, or should I get her to do it?

Should I ride first?

She is driving down so I am getting her to pick me up as this way I can show her the way to the stables, so there's going to be plenty of questioning time!

Let her do everything and watch from a distance. Don't offer any help unless she asks - that way you can make sure in competent.

Just ask what she'd like to do, what plans she has and anything else thats pops into your mind!

i would get her to tack up, and just watch her ,get her to ride first just make sure she capable of doing things she has told you, ive had a lot of loanee come to me saying how they ridden all there lifes and no the ins and outs of horses it turns out they dont know how to tack up or even lunge

I think getting her to ride first is best, as he will be fresh out the stable (kept him in overnight) and so I guess it would be best to see how she handles him.

He's not a complicated horse, just a green and grumpy 4yo. Absolute angel on the ground though.

Thanks guys, you're really helping

I always want to watch the HO ride for the first 5-10 mins to insure the horse is not going to kill me!

I have been offered some "safe" rides in the past, got on and ridden the horse to almost being bucked off! Owner said that it was normal for him and that they considered it safe!

Its about trust on both sides, you have to trust the loanne is capable but they also have to trust that you are not offering a crazy horse. (i'm sure you are not but its just something to consider!)

I think it would be safer if you ride him first Scribbles. Though it is important to see how she handles his freshness a lot of people have misguided ideas about their rding ability, she may tell you she's very good, then get on and be bucked off, make him do something silly and get hurt and then you could end up getting in trouble for it. Personally I would ride him first to take the edge off him, but only for a short time and not trying to tire him at all. Then let her ge on, he should still have energy but be less likely to cause any harm (not saying he would), and then if something did happen at least you could say you rode him first and he was fine so they can't just say you blindly put her on a fresh horse, etc, etc, just trying to look at it from a legal point of view!

Anyway I hope it goes well and she likes him and you like her! Fingers crossed X

Oh dear, well I didn't see your replies before going out, so she sat on him first. He's not a mad thing anyway so she was ok, but I don't think she is going to be right for him, as lovely as she is.

Only one other person coming to see him now
