Do they ever have open water in Eventing SJ. Certainly didn't when I evented, but it was in OZ, well known for water shortages!!
We were discussing this at Addington today. Of the eventers out SJ'ing, Daisy, Bumble and Joss Gray to name a few, they all jumped the open water no trouble. Our groom thought they might have gone paddling........was disappointed when none of them did!

I havent ever seen one eventing I guess its just asking for trouble!

although I did a derby type thing before and my mare (who evented her whole life) just popped over as if she knew she wasnt supposed to touch it!
maybe they can differentiate between showjumps and a xc course better than we think!!
 
Floyd evented and show jumped and he never put a foot in the water show jumping or tried to jump the water eventing. Guess he knew the difference.
 
they used to occasionally at 4* events and at WEG or Olympics. iirc the open water was only allowed to be 12' wide, not as wide as pure-sj open water. it didn't cause problems though, if galloped at it, all the horses realised they were supposed to jump over it.
