My mare was shod yesterday and is very footsore this morning. She was the same last time she was shod but seems worse this time. I'm not sure whether to get the farrier back out or see if it settles down. She was fine to shoe. I'm wondering if he has taken them abit too far back and made her sore.

Did you mention it to your farrier when it happened last time?

I would give him a call and speak to him about it with the intention of him coming back to have a look as it could be one of loads of reasons and potentially not the farriers fault. - ie. sensitive to hot shoeing, bruising, taken back too hard, a tight nail (although this would affect one foot not all) etc etc.

I didn't mention it to him last time as she was fine the day after. I did mention it yesterday after she was shod and he said to see how she was this time. I have rung him and waiting for him to get back to me. It's just worrying because she never used to do this. It's only been the last 2 times shod. Had the same farrier for over a year.

When my mare was sore after shoeing the vet reckoned that the hammering was enough to set off a small episode of laminitis and to give her Danilon to ease the pain - she was alright the next day.
