So I'm taking the trailer out for the first time with the pony on board ( been doing lots of practice unloaded!) but have a couple of probably very silly questions!!

When we travel back from our clinic it will be dark- do you have a light on in the trailer?? Or are your horses happy to travel in the dark??

Obviously the front flap ( can't think of right word.. The opening bit above the front ramp!!) will be shut, but what about the back two?? Do you shut them and close the horse in totally or leave them open ??

Thanks for answering my last minute panic numpty questions!!

i'd always leave the back top flaps open (unless travelling a baby or youngster) as i think its too claustraphobic for them when closed.

Main thing is to take it super slowly and balanced around corners. Its a different feeling driving with the trailer loaded, its much slower around bends.

You can have the option in most trailers of leaving the light on and I tend to do this with my boy regardless as he was at one stage an awkward loader. I always do so when its dark. I only ever shut one half of the door on the rear of the trailer if it is really raining hard, especially when going down the motorway in heavy rain because the tyres from overtaking heavy goods vehicles can cause the rainwater lying on the surface to come over the top of the rear ramp. I also shut the same door if I am anticipating really heavy traffic - for instance when I took my boy to MKEC for the three day events the 2nd time I knew what the traffic was like after the first journey. The M1 on a weekday is a nightmare, it has an awful lot of high sided lorries, its quite claustraphobic to be surrounded by them in front, at the side and behind you. When they approach in order to overtake you they have to get very close behind you in order to overtake. This can be very scary to a horse to see a huge shape approach from behind.

I close all doors on a trailer, including the back top flaps. No different to a lorry of equitrek. Probably over the top but would hate for a horse to jump the back ramp, worse case scenario!

I always close the back doors and never travel with the light on. My trailer has good ventilation even with the doors closed. The only reason I would keep them open is if I thought he would be too hot, but it has to be in the 30s for that to happen.
