As the heading. My 20 yr old mare is a terrible flirt when in season. She and a new gelding have struck up a terrific friendship, almost joined at the hip. She's 14.1, he's 16.3. She came in from the field Monday morning with a patch about the size of your hand on her left shoulder. Dried on slime or dribble made it look shiny. In the middle of it, a little patch of raw skin. She wasn't overly troubled but it didn't look much fun. On the opposite side of her neck, a much bigger patch - the size of both hands side to side lengthways. Again, dried on wet of some description but this one was very badly bruised and swollen. She didn't want me touching it so I haven't done much more than gently sponge cold water over it. Can't see any broken skin but what on earth is the dried slime? My take on it is that her romantic boyfriend has got too excited and either couldn't make his way (if you get my drift) through her Buzz Off fly rug, or she had a headache and told him to push off. So he's bitten her. Or he could have bitten her in the throes of passion? They both went out quite happily this afternoon and were grazing a foot apart as normal. Any thoughts?
