Quirky mix breeds in shelters

More and more I'm seeing so-called hybrid or first-cross dogs turn up at our local shelter. Has anyone else (Cayla?) started to notice this, too?

A "Shorkie "

A "hairy Puggle"

A "Rottshep"

And a dachshund/beagle . (Or what would that be a Beaghund?

Everywhere!

Its fashionable right now i think and the fact that they are showing up in shelters so much shows that once they grow up they are not the cute tiny thing they were as a puppy.

I walked a Rott/Shep for a local rescue and no one would take him because he was so fierce looking. Poor fella was so soft, he was in kennels for so long he had gone a bit screwy, I remember trying to drag him past this big puddle because he was obsessed with his reflection.

Obviously, some of these mix dogs are going to be hideous when they mature

all puppies look sweet.
Also a lot of them are high-drive crosses so will be no good for a newbie or lazy owner, and some of them will have health issues, being from untested parents

Rosiie picked up another good point earlier regarding the weightbearing breeds x with another weightbearer or a lighter dog, their frames will not be adequate to support them and they will run into joint problems later on - and novicey owners will not know to restrict exercise (I mean heavy running and jumping) before 12 months, so the poor things will be wrecked by the time they reach adulthood

Well, I have to say that this shelter has an amazing placement rate. Rarely is a dog there longer than a fortnight, and that includes Pit Bulls. (Speaking of which, I have an immense crush on this gorgeous fella.)

 
We recently had a colli x staffi at work..........it was wierd like a fluffy haired back and white colli coat with a fat staff head and body

I get a bit annoyed with designer names on cross breeds.

For example, I had a french bull dog x shih tzu that the owners claimed was a "bull shitz" - which actually was quite funny, but the dog not very nice (to look at or in nature).

We get jackdoodles (jack russel x poodle)
the usual labradoodle, cockerpoo etc (meanwhile my husband wants to know if you cross a labradoodle with a cockerpoo, do you get a cocker-doodle-doo??)

There are some folk out there who are knowlegeable breeders that are breeding things like Poochons (poodle x bichons - which the ones that i've seen have been beautiful IMO), but the name kind of irks me. It's a poodle x bichon, why not just call it that?

We have a client that has a poodle x whippet - I keep beggin her to let me trim it like a bedlington but she always says no...boo. I wonder what it's designer lable would be - a Poopit maybe?
 
My 1st two dogs were ESS x Flatcoat (or something equally big, black and hairy) and a ESS x Collie (or something of similar build, smooth coated and black/white), both from the same litter, but suspect more than one dad as litter was a split with 5 black/hairy/stocky and 5 black/white, small/finer pups............Mum was a very well breed ESS, but the local bitch/bike!! This was the 2nd time she had got out in season and been caught............owner wanted to breed her to a ESS, but was pipped to the post each time (stupid woman). Anyway in her words there were 10 useless pups in the litter.............now roll on 30yrs..........seems my mutts were designer!!

While the dog in the picture is beautiful, I wish they hadn't called him a pit bull mix - he actually looks like an EBT cross with his longer nose..

Doubt it - APBT are much more common in the states, EBT much less so, he looks like a Pit mix to me.
