I saw the guy I bought my chestnut TB from this weekend and he told me something that really made me very sad. Chestnut was a flat racehorse, raced 11 times, came last 11 times therefore not very fast or very competitive - guy told me that the trainer used to use him to teach the young jockeys how to whip the horse.
That really broke my heart because Pip is such a gentle good-natured horse and it upsets him when you give him a smack, not that he'd ever try and get you off, and I can't carry a schooling whip because it stresses him as he can see it in his peripheral vision the whole time. I really can't think of a horse that deserves to be whipped less - I really can't. He just is such a trier. Anyway, it's a happy ending because I ended up having him and that's a home for life, no matter what.
So, sad story, but happy ending.
