Hubby and I took a girl from the yard to a big comp today. her mum has had a serious operation and so can't drive her lorry for her. So she could go hubby drove her lorry for her and we acted as grooms / horse holders and entertained her little sister.
It was the first time I've ever been to a big show at a posh place and I was amazed at the quality of the horses there. Some of the lorries were pretty amazing too!
She was jumping 85cm and 95cm and the classes were huge. Just looking at the height of the jumps made me feel seriously ill but it appeared there were enough nutters there who wanted to do it!
However what shocked me was how badly some of the riders rode. I am a pants rider but honestly I think my hands were better than some of those there. It was horrible to see these beautiful horses bitted up to the nines and being yanked about so violently.
It appeared to be a hard course as loads of people knocked up cricket scores or fell off but the number who then leathered the hell out of their horses afterwards was scary. There was one guy (very very well built shall we say) riding a horse that was too small for him proudly telling us the horse was 17 and had had 2 years off after a kissing spines operation. He yanked it around the 85cm and flattened most of it then took it in the 95cm (where thankfully he came to his senses and retired)!
Another little cob fell in the warm up ring and took ages to get up. We assumed they'd withdrawn it but nope they just put it in the competition with another rider.
There were a few amazing riders who were so quiet and fluid I could only dream of being that good but on the whole it seemed a lot of expensive beautiful horse flesh and a fair few people with bad riding habits. Is that normal for these big posh events?

umm, where was it? was it affiliated? 85 cm and 95 cm are very small courses, fwiw.
the standard of riding sounds horrific, worse than i am used to seeing at local bsja shows and at BE events. unfortunately there will always be those who don't care about the horse or who are too ignorant to even realise the damage they're doing. poor horses.

yes it is normal.. unfortuntly.. it shouldnt be.

what i always find is.. the arrogant ones whothink there too good enter the affiliated and you get a lot of good riders and good horses in unaffiliated who do not think they are good enough.

you see it in dressage.. alot of very good quality horses who go around the arena looking very pretty but having someone yanking on there mouth and bouncing, unbalanced on the back causeing alot of tension.. then bollocking the horses for low marks..

it is a real shame!

It was unaffiliated.
I now know how much a wuss I am then as the 95cm looked HUGE!! I wouldn't have done that for all the champers in france (nor even having drunk a great deal first!!).

hey.. your not a wuss.. i used to jump anythign u ut in front of me and i mean anythign! now... i struggle with 60cm and last your i had ted over 3 foot 3 and was over the moon! dead proud!

Yes, we see it alot when we are out. Have to say I see worse with kids on ponies. Parents seem to find it ok to give the kids spurs, whips and then bit the pony up to the eyeballs with gags!
Such a shame isnt it.

Yes I have seen similar too and it is so wrong and upsetting. Its why I do not go to shows anymore.

Hollyf - I wish I had a pound for everytime I have seen that one!

Saw a girl yesterday jumping a pony in a gag - yanking on its mouth and booting the hell out of it--at the same time....poor thing did its best for her, she placed it at really awkward angles and it jumped clear despite having her hanging off its mouth ...poor thing, didn't deserve it.....

Unfortunatly it seems to be the norm now! The last time i went to a show it was the same, bearing in mind that was probably 10years ago now, it's such a shame to see and don't know why the stewards don't say anything, but don't think it would make a difference if they did! Some people just don't appreciate what they have!

I'm not suprised given I was told at a riding school that I couldn't ride because I wouldn't boot the poor cob in the ribs and saw on it's mouth

I took my old TB showing a month or so ago. He has a habit when he is tense of grinding his teeth. It does make a horrid noise. The judge told me to boot it hard, as he was giving her a headache.

I said no and got placed last.

Didn't mind though as I have never booted my boy and am not going to start for some old dried up judge.

To be devil's advocate, there is also bad riding from people who are too passive. I saw a lot of this at an unaffiliated sj show on Sat. They just let their horses run at the jumps, didn't attempt to shorten their strides when they were wrong for uprights of planks, or not straight or whatever. They just sat there, did nothing and knocked the jumps down or refused. having soft hands on its own isn't enough for good jumping.

We have competitions on at our yard very regularly and I know a few riders have been told to get off and not come back after terrible riding that would be detrimental to the horse.

Any you aren't a wuss, I cringe at the thought of a trotting pole, yet I take my nutter horse out hacking and frequently go ballistic and I just giggle... how does that work! Her leaps could clear a 6ft jump sometimes I'm sure
