My horse has been lame on and off for well over 3 months now. The vet came out the first time and found pus so we poulticed and he came sound, this has happened 3 times since each time coming sound. He was sound when I rode him only Monday, tuesday he was fine, weds slightly unlevel and today hopping. His pastern at the back is swollen and very sore to touch. Could this be quittor? There is heat in his foot and pastern.
Any info would be great.

Doesn't sound like Quittor (there is normally pus breaking out through the skin and hoof wall) - sounds like an infection in the foot that hasn't quite cleared up so keeps returning. How long do you poultice for? I'd ask your farrier to have a look as well, and ask the vet if there is anything more they can do - it shouldn't be going on for this long

jumpthemoon- I think that the pus is trying to break through the back of his pastern just above his heels as it is very hot and painful in that area.
The farrier is coming this afternoon. If no joy then looks like a vet job again.

My Shetland gelding had quittor in 2006, his lateral cartilage was infected and he had it scraped and a bit removed under GA. There was a wound on his pastern which I had to poultice and keep open to drain before he had the op. The quittor was diagnosed by xray, he was badly lame for about 2 weeks despite poulticing and a weeks worth of antibiotics, so was wheeled into vets for investigation. He has come through it all very well and is absolutely back to normal. Good luck with your horsie!

My pony's original wound turned out to be in the bulb of his heel, but the pus came out on his pastern so its possible your horse has the same. To be honest if it is quittor I don't think the farrier can do anything, its a vet job. Keep us posted though.

Farrier has been- the horse is not reacting to the hoof testers but is reacting when you touch the heel and pastern area. Farrier believes it is still pus as has a pulse in his foot, heat and swelling so he has advised me to poultice the whole hoof and the pastern until after the weekend- if no better to get the vet.
