If you followed the post over the weekend by me asking if vets keep records of the dogs they put to sleep, this is the story..

Patch was the most sweetest dog you could ever come across, he was great! Playful, affectionate, fun, but most of all he was the most loyal dog I have ever met.

This story begins where Patch had to find a new home as we could no longer keep him with us any more. He no longer got on well with our other dog, they kept fighting and were very unhappy in eachothers prescence. Also we were expecting our first child and Patch had had a hard past before he was given to us, which made him very slightly unpredictable.*

We were on the search for a home for Patch where we could visit him whenever we wanted to, still take him out for walks, and where it would be on the basis that Patch would ALWAYS remain ours and we would be able to go and collect him if we ever wanted him back.

It wasn't long before that perfect home popped up. A friend of a friend, the home was perfect, the girl, let's call her 'N' was lovely and caring. The day we left Patch behind was one which split my heart in to two.. Leaving him with somebody else.. What were we thinking?!

As time went on we visited Patch in his 'new' home, he seemed happy, well fed.. But when it came to leaving him I broke down in to tears.. He wanted to cone with us, but we couldn't take him. So the visits were made far and few between as it was so hard to walk away from him every time.

Not long after our last visit we heard that N had had her children taken off of her by social services due to drug abuse. Straight away we were on our way, no questions asked to go and pick up Patch and to bring him home. Away from what was to happen..*
It turned out the children were up in their beds asleep when we arrived, so Patch stayed where he was.

Until two weeks after, the truth comes out about our beloved pet, Patch..

I get a message on facebook..
'Patch is dead, sorry.'

We phoned N to find out what had happened, she told us that Patch had died and that he was being looked after by a 'friend' when it happened.*

N gave her 'friend', let's call her K, our phone number so she could explain more to us which is where we found out the awful truth.*

K was no friend of N, K had BOUGHT Patch off of N.

N had been advertising our dog in local shops as she had 'other commitments' and could 'no longer look after him.' N had advertised our beloved dog for £40 as that's all he meant to her..*

Luckily Patch had fallen in to safe hands just in time with K.

One night, a week after K had bought Patch, Patch turned aggressive towards her children, growling at them and snapping at them. K rang the RSPCA as this behaviour for Patch was unusual.

On the 16th of November 2010 Patch was collected by the RSPCA and taken to a vets practice for further investigation in to this sudden change in behaviour.*

In the early hours of the morning, on the 17th of November 2010,*our gorgeous, sweet, loyal dog Patch was put to sleep.

Patch had developed a brain tumour which was actually visible on top of his head in the form of a lump under his skin, which was pressing on his brain causing him to be unexpectedly aggressive at different times. He also had a lump on his back foot which was thought to be a grass seed which had worked it's way in, become infected and left untreated..*

N had also told K that Patch had been fed on Wednesday and didn't need to be fed again until Friday, she had been starving him..

The vets said the brain tumour would have been visible on top of Patch's head for quite a while.. So N would have known about it before selling him. The same goes for his foot.

The brain tumour was visible as Patch had been severely mistreated before being given to us, beaten, starved, and used as a bait dog to train fighting dogs. There was a small deformity in his skull above his eyebrow which is thought to have been from a beating he endured when he was younger, where part of his skull had broken/shattered and never healed properly. The tumour grew through this hole..

We never got to say goodbye, and never will do as Patch is now gone.. N never gave us that chance, but at least he is no longer in pain.

So please, give your dog that extra cuddle, that extra kiss, and think twice when you get mad.. We'd do anything to just be able to have one more minute with Patch to say goodbye and let him know everything is alright.. Think twice for us.. He was only 5 years old..

R.I.P Patch, we all love you and you'll never ever be forgotten. You were one in a million, worth every penny and your weight in gold by a trillion, not a measly £40 :(

Good night baby boy,
loads of love forever and always,
Your family xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

67 people have looked at this with no comment. Probably because, like me, they don't really know what to say.

What a dreadful and tragic story.

Patch looked a really gentle and friendly dog and I feel so sorry that it turned out like it did.

RIP Patch xxx

Thank you for reading even though it was so long! I can't even read it back without crying as it really has broken my heart that 'N' could do such a thing to a dog that was never hers.

Thank you for your kind words, he really was the best dog. He was the type of dog that would give his life for you, would protect you until the end.

Also, thank you for all of your support in this thread and my last thread in this section. You were all so very helpful. Patch would have been grateful too xx

Thank you everybody, you've all been so kind. Your lovely comments mean so much. I would never wish this happen to anybody else, it truly has left a massive hole in all of our hearts :( xx
