My aunt had her mare put down this morning

Tilly was a one in a million mare, she was bought as a yearling and has been in the family for over 30 years.
In her life she had won many championships and produced some cracking foals. She also provided me with one of my first rides on a horse when I was 2yro my grandad walked me around the village on her sadly I cannot get the picture onto the computer

but it my most treasured picture in the entire world.
She had a brilliant character and has often escaped from her field away from home and walked herself back home through the village.

She loved nothing more than being at home.
She never had a sick or sorry day but then she developed arthritis in her knees and this was managed with painkillers and she coped fine for several years however this last week she just went downhill and became extremely lame even when she was on the painkillers, lost a lot of weight (she was already VERY hard to keep weight on in winter but it had just dropped off her) and was constantly laying down because of this that my aunt made the decision that it would be best she was pts. She had led a very long and happy life.
It was hard to see her go as she has meant a hell of a lot to the whole family and it has hurt everyone like hell. My two boys came over to watch over their field mate for her final hours Ed took himself away and came back to her just before she went down, Sty never left her. He was a real comfort to me as it happened and curled his neck around me so i couldn't see until after she had gone down. They stayed with her until she was put on the truck and taken away.
It broke my heart that you could see it on their faces as much as you could see it on ours that they knew what was happening.

Few years ago when she was around 31.

Sleep well old girl you will be missed more that you will ever know.

Thank you everyone for your very kind and touching messages you have set me off crying again.

Fibble, yes the vet had suggested we seriously up her dosage even more but as she has struggled in winter her whole life it wasn't fair for her to go through another one it wouldn't have been fair bless her.
Dingle - thanks it has been hard work to keep her looking well at her age

Seriously thank you every one of you

What a stunning horse, with a beautiful character to match. Huge hugs hun, she had such a wonderful life that was full of love. R.I.P. Tilly. x x

Im so sorry for your loss but reading your post I am sure she had one hell of a wonderful life with your family.

I too had to make the decision this week to say goodbye to a pony (my daughter's lead rein pony) who was only 14 or so but who was no longer responding to painkillers, was obviously in pain, and who had arthritis (coupled with laminitis) and who I thought would not cope with the winter. I am heartbroken and empathise sincerely with you. We have both done the right thing for our dearly loved horses, but I do know that doesn't make it feel any better right now. Im hoping for a week of snow storms, endless rain, freezing temps and knee deep mud, all of which will back up my belief that I did the right thing at the right time.

My thoughts are with you. Take care xxx

It's never easy, no matter how long their lives have been. She was deeply loved and death only has fear for us. The sadness, I'm afraid, is the debt we must pay for having them and for all the joy they bring us.

Virtual ((((hugs)))) for you, your family and her companions.

Sleep tight, Tilly x
