This assignment is all about fittening and training horses. I'm not so good with rules and regulations etc, and there's a lot about competition vaccination rules and such like.

This report's causing me a lot of trouble. It might just be over-thinking it all, is it wanting me to go in depth or is it simply 'muscles grow as the horse works more, bones harden, it becomes more effective to breathe' etc?!

I need to write a report, using relevant diagrams, to explain the physiological changes that take place during the fittening programme on the following systems:-
• Muscular
• Skeletal
• Respiratory
• Cardio-vascular

I've never competed, I've never had to deal with vaccinating a horse for competitions etc. Can anyone help?!

Task 2 (M2)
a) Create a chart/table to show an initial programme for flu/tetanus vaccination for an event horse, indicating when you would ideally start it and why.

i would have a look on amazon as I think ther is a book that covers this subject but I can not remeber the title.Look on the BE web site reagarding the currant rules

Ok is the first one a pass or a merit? if a pass then you do not need masses of detail, if a merit then abit more detail for each. Break it down into chunks.

it is asking you for diagrams, so a diagram of the respiratory system, the heart, the skeleton and muscles. briefly explain what will take place in a fittening program (depending on what you are fittening for!) for example, so many weeks of walk etc, introduce hill work and increase to 40 mins work a day.

once you have explained what a fittening program is, you need to explain how fittening a horse affects it physioligically, so certain muscles will develop and strengthen more, so maybe the rump muscles which is the main engine of the horse.
the heart will become stronger to pump blood around the body to cope with the faster work asked.

for breathing, think about, if you were to put and unfit horse on the gallops what would its pulse and resp like when it gets back compared to a fit horse..

so a flu/tet program for an event horse would be the same as any, find out what age to start, it might be when its weaned or older! and its asking you to explain why you do this. they have there first vac, then a second vac about six weeks later (at a guess!) and then a yearly booster after this. its recorded down on a vacine card/passport. for a horse eventing, there are FEI rules that it must be vacinated up to date and on certain things. Check the FEI web for this.

do one assignment at a time. to many of our students skip from one to another and get in a muddle.
there is plenty of resources online and in your library.

The Athletic Horse by Hodgkin and Rose might help - I'm sure you can get it from the library.
That should help with the exercise physiology - also EVJ has some good supplements that might help - a short internet search should help.

The vaccination bit - look up the rules - maybe talk about different types of competition - racing vs dressage.

You don't need to be an expert you need to do some reading and thinking about it.
Don't panic - sit and divide each bit up and tackle one at a time.

You'll be fine!

Search Google Books for texts on equine exercise physiology and fittening programs. That's how I got through college without having to wait for books to arrive!! ;)
