A kind neighbour put a note through my door today saying that he had noticed my fields had a rabbit problem and he would be happy to help me get rid of them with ferrets which would not alarm the horses - he offered to do it for free.

Can anyone tell me whether this is a good method of rabbit control?

It's not so much that the rabbits are there but they have taken to excavating enormous burrows in the middle of the fields and I worry about the horses falling down the holes and breaking a leg.

Would I normally have to pay someone to ferret my rabbits?

Fella at work keeps ferrets and was happy to clear the rabbits from a friends field for free. He got to exercise his ferrets and kept the rabbits (to eat).

He even skinned one and prepared it for one of the other girls in the office - we found it wrapped in newspaper and stuffed in the fridge - not sure where else she was supposed to keep it till the end of the day though ;)

one of my friends used ferrets, not sure what it cost her, but it was brilliant!! I remember her saying that she would rather have the rabbits out that have a horse with a broken leg :/ hope it helps all I have heard is that it is great :) good luck x

My OH went ferreting last weekend with the YO's partner. The ferrets were great at getting the rabbits out of their warrens. Unfortunately my OH and the other guy are rubbish shots with their guns and didn't kill any!

It's a bit of a 'quid pro quo'....everyone wins. Your neighbour gets land free to work his ferrets. You get your land cleared of rabbits and benefit from the extra grass available.....do you know how much grass a wild rabbit can eat??? Without looking it up, all I can tell you is that many sheep farmers around here pay good money for people to clear their land of bugs bunnies!

Our fields have the ferret men in occasionally, the horses stand and watch and they seem to leave with a lot of rabbits! The rabbits are a pain, a horse could disappear down some of the vast holes they dig. :)
