Rabies in Netherland

There hasn't been much about it over here, I had to actually scroll down google to find an article dated this month. But it sounds like the situation is in hand (both puppies have been PTS and all those that have been in contact have been or will be vaccinated). http://www.nd.nl/artikelen/2013/oktober/22/hondsdolheid-geconstateerd-bij-twee-puppy-s

To be honest, the amount animals are moving around now, especially with these bulgarian puppies etc being bought into the west because of the profits that can be made, it probably is only a question of time before it hits the UK shores. However, the vaccination isn't very expensive and lasts 2 years rather than one. And even though we have it over here over the last 25 years only 3 people have died from it (obviously 3 too many and the article doesn't state the canine deaths).

The big difference between the Netherlands and the UK is that, as an island population, few dogs here are vaccinated against rabies. A case here would require mandatory vaccination of all dogs within a radius.

^^^ This. I know that a lot of European countries live with rabies but the majority of dogs are vaccinated, over here it is a totally different scenario. As you say Katikins, it is the dogs being brought in from Eastern European countries by people who are out to make money and may cut corners, that are the problems. In another report I read today it says that Romania has had 751 cases of rabies since January 2012.
