They have a higher digestible energy, and are quite high in starch.
If you are wanting more energy I'd be more tempted to try the HDF slow release energy cubes, or some alfabeet for increased condition, rather than the high starch racehorse cubes.
Not sure about the protein levels etc but a friend of mine used to give them to her veteran and he looked better at 25 than he did at 16 before he had them. He also wiped the floor with the competition at elementary dressage too!
Thanks...only reason I ask is it's the only thing left in the feed store earlier today, other than normal horse and pony cubes. I normally get any kind of high conditioning feed for them, but it was racehorse cubes or a low-maintenance mix, so I had to go with the racehorse cubes - but just wanted to check first! Horses are a 13y/o ex-racer who's prone to weight loss and lack of topline/muscle and a 2 year old colt [who incidently is only getting a small amount to keep him quiet when I feed the other horse.]
unless you want your horse to think its a racehorse i wouldnt feed them. Without the workload you'll just be asking for problems - fizziness/tying up/protein poisoning being some of the not so serious possibilities.
If you want weight gain, go for conditioning feeds/blue chip/copra etc etc.
just seen your post above - can you mix it with the other stuff?
Such a change in diet wont be good for any type of horse in any work load.
DONT feed the same amounts that you would normally
I've mixed it with the topline nuts I've got left from previously which will last till the weekend probably, plus chaff.
I've put literally a 1/4 of a scoop of the cubes [normally gets a scoop of topline] in his feed, 1/2 topline and a scoop of chaff.
He was on 3 meals a day before, however, today I just put a chaff and a handful off topline nuts in his lunchtime feed with no racehorse cubes in it. He only had the racehorse cubes in his evening feed.
He's also worked hard for 2 hours a day at least at the moment [not saying in the same way as a racer by any means!] and stabled the majority of the time but he's kept fit and worked hard if that makes any difference at all. He is 'hunting fit', though not currently hunting at the moment as I'm back at my parents for the holidays till the new year - hence different feed shop!
What brand are they? If they are Baileys Racehorse Cubes and you are substituting for Baileys Topline Cubes, then not a lot of difference if you look at the analysis and ingredients of both on their website!
