Hi all,
I would really appreciate some help at looking into a TB mares pedigree.

her name is Cheyenne dawn, Breeding: The West (USA) - Miss Lear (0) (Lear Fan (USA))
15-y-o chestnut filly

She has evented successfully unnaffiliated, and raced 5 times with no wins.
does anyone know any information about how good her pedigree is?

Im just curious :)

The breeding is North American, they are generally bred to run on dirt tracks rather than the grass of UK bred horses, having said that fashions and trends swing to and fro, at the moment the world is buying Britich bloodstock, but 20 years ago the Brits were buying from the US.
However, there would be little/no interest in progeny from your mare, the rule of thumb is not to buy unless the dam has won, it is a given that the sire will have won some decent races or he would not be standing at stud.

The link to War Admiral is tenuous to say the least, and I don't recognise any of the close relatives, though I don't know about US horses. Northern Dancer [Can] was a sire of influence, better by far than his own racing record would have suggested, he was also prolific, a sire of sires, and there are few american horses who don't have him n their pedigree. He was only 15.2 [I think].
Of course the North American racecourses are mostly flat.
I think that is everything I know!

One thing that you can guarantee, she will be related to the great Eclipse :D

Mind, so are my pure bred Quarter Horses and Paints ;)

I have a circular chart from the Racing Museum [£22.00}, from which I can trace any TB, not that I have worked it out yet for those I am interested in, because really, it is the sire and the dam that I feel are important.
Idealy the sire should be a sire of sires and the dam should have only winners through and through. A good brood mare can found a stud, but trying to identify such a one is a talent given to few, and luck plays a part due to the length of the breeding to racing cycle.

Interestingly she was a very cheap purchase at the sales. I used to work for the guy who trained her, and he never has anything well bred as his owners can't afford those sorts of horses, but he does well with what he has. The fact that she never won in the sort of races she was running in is telling! The mother never ran, and was sold off cheaply when she finished racing.
So not well bred from a racing perspective.

I'm love looking at blood lines and mine are geldings. Before the internet back in the day when we looked in books for research traced the male line of one of mine sadly no longer with us back to the founding stallion.

Thankyou everyone for your replies :) I don't own her but am going to see her on Saturday. She seems to be everything im looking for, she is a good size and has nice legs, and i was just curious about her pedigree.

Well good luck with the viewing if you are wanting a riding/ competition horse the breeding not that relevant .
I hope she's everything you are looking for .

Trysinger [IRE] damsire unknown, which is unusual, sire Try My Best [USA] , a miler.

Looking in the wrong place maybe heres Trysinger ped ,she has most likely not bred anything that has set the world alight

Cheyenne Dawn was raced by her breeders which is often due to being sentimental her OR of 42 puts her in the needing a zimmer frame category, certainly not a mare to have pretentions of breeding a TB from..

I think the thing is that lines that could produce a good racehorse are not necessarily the ones that sportshorse breeders look for. I got some interesting comments when I asked about mine from that point of view. I don't know enough about it to comment on your mares breeding.

There are whole discussions I've seen about certain TB lines that are looked for especially especially on the Chronicle of the horse forum where they seem to discuss tb breeding from a sportshorse point of view a lot more. http://www.chronofhorse.com/forum/forum.php

Im not intending to breed, she is just going to be a nice rining horse for myself. Pedigrees do interest me though so i was curious :)

Pedigrees fascinate me too. I much prefer geldings but will always look at a pedigree to assess temperament etc. For instance I would not buy anything with Cruising in it despite him being a fabulous competition horse getter. My reason - his stock are likely to be too good for me to ride.

Good luck with the mare, she is a lucky girl to end her days with you, not all failed racehorses have desirable lives.

I've got a warmblood with Cruise Missile as a grandsire, she had one heck of a loose jump on her and if she wasn't retired due to severe kissing spines my sister has said she wouldn't havd been able to sit to her jump as it was so powerful
