Racehorse rehab centres

All are very good.

ROR or Greatwood or TRC all 3 are slightly different but all serve the purpose of retraining racehorses and rehome them.

Can't comment on England but out here I would not go near one - emotional and unpratical is the basis for most of these, and they get themselves in very deep very quickly!

Its not for the purpose of retraining but rehabbing and then rehoming a horse with extensive physical problems as Ive exhausted all my options..

It's where I got my boy from - we're actually featured as one of their succuess stories!!!

Had heard such rumours about one centre but I wonder if they are more sorted out now. I also know that someone else from here sent a horse to another centre that needed sorting out physically and thus sensitive rehoming and they were very good...but I cant remember who it was!

They're usually pretty good at getting back to people. I emailed them yesterday about one of the horses and not heard anything yet. They have a huge operation there and there's someone who runs the admin side of it all I think - they may be part time so not yet picked up emails/messages.

Awww is this about Owen? I thought someone in your village might want take him on? Sorry if that didn't come off as it sounded perfect for him.

Yes *cries* he's gone from bad to worse, and is no longer suitable as a hack I think. Having final discussions about his future with the vet tomorrow morning first thing. I really am at my wits end, dont know if he really has any future at all, but will chat to vet and see what he thinks. If its just a temporary blip I thought that maybe a racehorse rehab place would offer him a better chance and be more likely to find the right home for him.

The lady in the village absolutely adored him said that she would have him, and then changed her mind before Owen had his latest setback. She was a rarity- so lovely and the type of person that you would have trusted your most precious horse with

I sent a horse with an arthritic knee to Greatwood. He was five, the arthritis stemmed from an old injury before we brought him (we brought him at 3, so must have been as a yearling or 2yo).
Although im sure they are looking after him properly, they dont seem to be very copped on. Ive rung a few times, basically just to find out if theyve re exrayed him and whether he has a future or not.
The first time I got 'oh we're just giving him a bit of time out from racing, out in the field.' The horse had been out in the field for 6 months when I sent him there!
The next time I got 'oh hes living in now, with his mates.'
Pi55ed me off tbh.
They did require a £500 donation to take him, and I had a lot of trouble to get him in there. They also said they only take horses in at certain times of year.

Hmpph! You see, thats exactly the kind of attitude I was concerned about and kind of confirmed my worries about some of them. GW had a show stand at a horse show a while back- and I tried to talk to the guy there who was in charge, one of the team leaders I think he was and he really was not the sharpest knife in the draw. It was like trying to have a conversation with a 6 year old.

I tried to loan a horse from one of the said rescue centres above years back, spent many weekends on motorway for over 3/4 hours visiting, was told at every visit, "next time you come you can try so and so out", had my boots and hat with me already was always being put off, made a decent donation as requested. Then heard nothing, no phone calls returned, just never heard from them again. My OH wrote a letter telling them what a shower of s**t they were as they never intended to loan out a horse they were just interested in taking our money.

They do charge for you to come and see their horses though (£30 I think, it's a compusary donation to their charity), even if the horse isn't one of their charity horses. I'd quite happily donate to the charity, but I wasn't too happy to have it demanded of me, since they were being paid to sell the horse that I viewed.
