Having recently and tragically lost my little mare (also an ex racer) I would like to get another. I have had two ex-racers previously both brought to produce privately for smallish sums and have been looking at websites but prices seem to have gone right up! What experiences do people have of the various rehoming charities? Darley is just up the road from me and have always had mares so might like to try a gelding this time. Any experiences good and bad, costs etc and pics of your horses now would be great!!! Thanks :D

what area are you..i may know of a small tb ex racer for sale
 
I'd skip the rehoming centres and just go straight to trainers. Give it a month or so and plenty of flat horses will be getting kicked out and some summer jumpers too.

but would be happy to look at a flat horse my last mare was a sprinter :)

This is my thought too. You sound more than capable of retraining your own ex-racer going by your previous experience.
 
You don't need to go to the sales just email trainers around you. Most of them are lovely and polite and will get back to you with either something that may be suitable or they may just say they have nothing at the moment but you lose nothing for asking.
 
My mum is about to go through the rehoming through a charity.
We've rung up a couple, Heros and Moorcroft to be precise and they are dying for her to come and try their horses. Apparently they have several big TB's with great temps that are sound and would be perfect for what my mum wants to do which is BD and low level unaff jumping.
We have appointments with both of them :D. HEROs wanted £30 up front before letting us view as apparently they put a lot of time and effort into the viewings and prepare a lot of horses to try. My mum didn't mind paying as it's for a good cause.
We are really excited about going. We aren't bothered about selling the horse on or making a profit, my mum just wants her next friend. We feel like we are putting something back in by going to the Charities.
Saying that she has also been offered two nice ones right out of training but they come from a yard very far away so we will go and see those only if the charities don't work out.
Hopefully it will be a good experience, I hope so as we are very excited :).
 
I've only ever heard really good things about Darley Rehoming, seems like they're a cut above the others, because they are subsidised heavily, they seem to put lots of work in before the horses get rehomed, and the final cost to you is £100 once they've done the 3 month check.

Have you seen the horses on the website?! They are gorgeous! My mum liked Monty the best :D
 
Sorry to hijack - im looking for an ex racer too but as im new to my area (Somerset) i dont know of any trainers.

Any ideas?

I love the look of Tic-Tac, but he's been "in the field" for quite a while so not sure what his problem is...

Darley looks so good and several very nice horses for sale, the price is great £120 (£100 + VAT) and you get full ownership unlike allot of places, http://www.darleyrehoming.co.uk/horses.asp plus its very local to me about 10 miles. Is it all a bit to good to be true?

I brought a 5 year old mare in November and produced her over last winter and sold her in the spring so not scared of a project but would not want anything younger than 4 really especially as i want to potentially lightly compete this season.
 
I got my boy through the Thoroughbred Rehabilitation Centre TRC (the original TB charity), he is just stunning. I have no desire to sell a horse on and they have a home for life with me circumstances permitting. But i do love the fact that if anything happens to me that he goes back into the TRC's care.
The TRC is a wonderful centre, the staff are great and the horses are a picture of health and happiness, i can't recommend them enough. They are extremely honest and upfront about the horses and it is very important that the horses are matched to the right loaner. Definatley worth a look if you are not interested producing and selling on. :D

No, it's not too good to be true, they offered me a lovely little chap a few months ago, but my circumstances had changed, and I had to turn him down, the only reason the costs are so low is that Darley Racing subsidise them heavily, only the Arabs have the sort of money to be able to do that!
 
May not be any good to you but there are two on the net ex racers up north by me but even if you paid Eric Gillie to bring them down would still be cheap as they are up for £100 pounds each very sad as you know where they will be going for that money.

The same people have also been advertising a pony who has also been reduced to the same price was up for more before.
They apparently are losing their place.:(

Do you have a link to these horses please?
 
Sorry was being a thicko not saying where they were advertised they are on the adtrader website if you put in latest ads they were added today, it does say they have been unused for a while and their pot bellies would support this.

They are round about the Newcastle area i am further north than that but if anyone was going to but them and needed help with anything then if i could i would try to help for that price you know where they are heading so if anyone needed up that end to help i can do, esp if they are going to get a nice home.
 
Have sent my application to Darley!!! I like the look of several, but Magic catches my eye could look very flashy when he has been working correctly and has a bit more weight and top line, his feet are a bit flat :( my last mare had very flat feet so used to the worries and woes they come with! Would like to just go and meet them and see who i take a liking to but dont know if it works like that - no doubt i will find out! Keep your experiences coming!
 
I bought my exracer from a riding school believe it or not, completely by accident and out of pity! He'd been up for sale for 2 years, never turned out and doped! He's a fantastic horse, very sharp and did flat and hurdles. His sire was Zafonic, so god can he move!!! He was trained by Henry Cecil, then went onto hurdles with George Promodrou(?). He was actually a very good catch, I understand the riding school bought him from the doncaster sales. I'm looking for another one also, have thought about the rehoming centres and Darley does appeal as you actually get to own the horse. I have 2 horses and it's a very difficult number to have as you can't take one anywhere without the other! Let me know how you get on with darley and also anyone who knows of any trainers in newmarket area wanting homes (as not too far away) would be great!!!
 
Darley are very nice and helpful but I would still have a vet check with xrays before taking any horse frrom any of the charities as Ive seen they dont always tell you of all the horses problems. Good luck in your search.

Good Luck! They do try to match you up with something that can do what you want it to do, and that will fit in with your situation yardwise, facilities etc. Looking forward to hearing how it goes!
 
Hinge Farm - can you send me a message saying what exactly you want. I have a lot of racing contacts and know 2 for sale at the moment. Or I can give you telephone numbers of several trainers in Newmarket where you can go and visit and have a look. There is generally at least one from each yard which will be looking for a home.
 
Im afraid I cant be of help in terms of recommending anyone but my ex-racer whos currently mid way through his ‘retraining programme’ was actually sold from a professional ‘racehorse rehoming centre’ to a teenage girl as her FIRST HORSE!! Needless to say he didn’t last long (I rang for info on him to which her mother replied ohh he kept racing off and throwing her - hmmm if I were him, Id have done the same) and he was subsequently sold onto another teenage girl who never actually got further than lunging him as she was too scared of him (her words) and her mum ende dup looking after him (who was petrified of leading him) … so thank god I found his little advert and the difference in him has been truly amazing in only 2-3 months. Good luck in finding your new horse and will keep my eyes peeled for any adverts. Have you tried preloved?
