Racehorse rehoming

Looking for something sound with no lumps and bumps (don’t mind white hairs) must move correctly as planning to do dressage and showing not to fussed about jumping nothing to big but 15hh+ would be nice, any age (4+) or sex. Don’t mind starting from the beginning with schooling but must be sensible hacking as only horses we have to hack out with are green and spooky so need something to lead the way a bit. (my last 5 year old coped with them and she was an ex racer!) Can PM me any details :)
 
Good luck with finding your new ex-racer! We are so excited, they really are such lovely horses. I got mine off a pm on here and he is so so fab, he literally turns his hoof to anything and is the most amazing jumping horse, I love him to bits!

We have appointments with both of them :D. HEROs wanted £30 up front before letting us view as apparently they put a lot of time and effort into the viewings and prepare a lot of horses to try. My mum didn't mind paying as it's for a good cause.
We are really excited about going. We aren't bothered about selling the horse on or making a profit, my mum just wants her next friend. We feel like we are putting something back in by going to the Charities.

They charge you £30 just to go and see if you want to pay them an extortionate fee to loan one??!!!!!!! (having stung the old owner for taking it on to rehome it in the first place - and selling a lot of them rather than loaning them...) Feck me..... Be very very careful with them - there are many people out there who would say that all is not what it seems with the set up there.

Darley have health records on every horse noting if it so much as coughed once as a foal - and as others have said - you actually OWN the horse when you have handed over money for it (and not a lot of money at that) - its a very very good rehoming set up. (nope, not connected and never had a horse from them, just happen to hear a lot about them all - and Darley are the one that consistantly has good said about them.)

I am currently looking for another ex-racer. I looked at Heros and was told that to loan a horse from them would cost £1500. Last time I went I was told that they had approx 85 horses.

I have visited the TRC in Somerset and for a small charity cannot praise them enough! It is obvious that they won't rehome a horse to someone they feel is either not a good enough rider or experienced enough in horse care to be able to cope with a tb. I believe they charge either £500 or £600 but also ask you to have a saddle that fits the horse before you leave.

I possibly will try Darley even though it is a long way from where I live. I am also considering asking some of the trainers in Lambourn but do not know which ones to ask. If someone could PM a coule of trainers names who seem to be honest I would be grateful.
 
Had a gelding from Darley a couple of years ago,he's absolutely adorable, lovely temperament, safe to hack etc.
You get a really good opportunity to try them in the school and they take you out for a hack when you go see the horse.
You then have the horse on loan for 3 months before they come to do a homecheck and you buy the horse.
And you can phone with any problems at any time so I would highly recommend them!
 
UPDATE: No luck so far with finding a new horse :( Spoke to Darley they will not have anything capable of unaffiliated dressage and showing until October-December time! But the two in question both have DJD (Degenerative joint disease) not exactly a great start for 3/4 year olds! Everything else that is ready at the moment is basically unsound or put together horrendously - Needless to say I’m so disappointed after all the good comments about Darley i thought i had found the perfect solution.

I went to look at one from a private home yesterday but she had been kicked in the field and had a huge lump on her stifle so could not ride her and she was 2.5 hours away! Everything else is about £2000 out of my price range.

This time last year i bought a perfectly good well-bred 5 year old including all tack and rugs for £850 as a winter project whilst my other mare had some time off wish i had not sold her on again now :(
 
Oh you'll be too far away from me - my mare is more than capable of what you want to do dressage wise, but is 9 years old. I'm in the Northwest.
 
Honestly, email trainers - Newmarket is nearby and there are innumerable trainers there. I'm sure there is soething just waiting there for you! You lose nothing by asking. Most will be being given away or for a small amount.

I think we have both suggested this before EKW. It does seem so simple being in that area!
 
Skip the charities - I was told by 2 of the "main" rehoming centres that as I am 6 foot tall I should never have thought about riding a TB as I am far too tall :rolleyes: they would be qaking in there boots if they found out I show-jump a just short of 15hh cob!
e-mail the local trainers, that is what we did when we found our TB.

Agree - either email local trainers or failing that, go to Brightwells sales. Next one isn't until 4th Oct now, but there are always loads of horses that go for £400-800.

You can pick up a great bargain, at much less cost and with far less baggage than most of the racehorse rehoming charities.
 
I have emailed all the trainers, I did it before i sent my Darley application - I have had 1 reply in nearly a month and that just said they would keep me in mind if something comes up, I am simply looking for something 3 or over, straight moving with good conformation and no lumps or bumps - most things considered. Have had no offers as yet! Have been to see a non TB horse today which would be a huge change but he is a nice boy, dont know what to do!
 
I am in Epsom and know of a couple of trainers who may be selling horses fairly cheaply - if you want contact details for them pm me, but obviously I realise it is a good couple of hours drive from you!
