I'm planning on taking Major to his first show on May the second, and am planning on entering the racehorse to riding horse classes. I was hoping to do the in hand on first then hop on and do the ridden class.

I've not done an awful lot of showing myself although have groomed at county level, but have never done anything to do with R2R classes so really wanted to know what to expect and also what the correct turn out would be for both horse and rider in-hand and under saddle?

It's not the biggest show in the world, but it's decent enough and on a surface. However it asks for written proof the horse raced, how would i get that? I have photos of him racing, his old training card from Brian Meehan and there are results all over the internet... but what do i actually need to produce?

A little photo of the man himself...

He's gorgeous!!! :)

I too would be interested in doing some of these classes, I'm really not a showing person, and apart from a bit of M+M with my sister's pony (just because you don't have to plait!) have never done any in my life, so will look forwards to any replies :D

My lad looks better under saddle, but his jumping is slightly questionable (about 100mph), do you have to jump? Also what are the judge's opinions on blemishes and scars gained during racing?

I can only answer one of those questions by saying no you don't have to jump! Although at this particular show they also have working R2R classes, but normally no you don't. Not sure if they mark down racing blemishes, thankfully Major did a handful of flat races so is relatively un-scathed!

The ROR website has info on turnout but briefly:

Horse, snaffle pelham or double, cavesson noseband, if you have a numnah then discrete to match the horse, make sure your stirrups are big enough and leathers go long enough for a male judge's feet. Your horse looks a riding horse type so ideally a coloured pretty browband but plain if you don't have one.

For you, tweed jacket (though don''t worry if you only have a navy or black jacket although black is not correct), beige or canary jods - just not show jumping white - dark gloves, strapped hats are now compulsory for ROR, collar and tie not stock.

In the ROR class the group will go round walk, trot canter, change rein, canter, possibly gallop or extend depending on the judge (and sometimes I think depending on how well the horses are behaving!). Then pull in, judge will ride, then strip the horses for conformation judging.

In some other racehorse classes the judge won't ride and you just do a show.

Hope that is of help.

Girlracer - looking at your pics again your horse could equally as well just go in a plain browband as looks bordering between hunter and riding horse though can't tell that well. Basically whatever and don't panic about spending lots of money if you haven't already got the stuff.

Apricot - in the TARRA classes blemished are definitely not taken into account. In ROR I think it would depend. If just a superficial scar then probably not, if it has left say a lump then it would go against it if there was a toss up between the horse and another that had gone as well and not got the lump.

Thank you everyone, i do have a coloured browband but do only have a navy jacket? I'm thinking i can use what i've got for now and if they tell me he's useless then i needn't bother buying the correct attire :p

I'll try and cobble something together, and maybe ask the judge on the day how best to turn him out :)
