Racehorse Urban Sea , dam of Derby-winner Galileo, dies aged 20 due to complications in foaling. The foal is fine and is with a nurse mare.

... i don't know much about breeding at all, but isn't a 20 year old rather old to be breeding from?

it is not unusual with TB's aand tbh they mares get the best care they dont foal unsupervised and chances arethis will have been her last one. I actually looked after this mare when it was a weanling/yearling and went with her to the sales. I have got some pictures somewhere of her galloping about in a paddock which i will try and find.

It's not too old if they've been bred from regularly, but you wouldn't start at around that age. I don't think 13 is too old at all! My mares were 15 & 11 when they had their first foals, & everything was fine.

What a racehorse, what a broodmare, what a legacy.

A sad way to go, foaling.

Let's hope the new colt serves her memory well.

RIP, you were one in a million.

Please sort your siggy, G4G............it's a nightmare on the screen..........

How typical! The racing industry rears its ugly head again. At twenty-years-old, that mare should have been enjoying a proper retirement, not churning out babies. Based on the four human years for every one horse year formula, that is the equivalent of an eighty-year-old woman giving birth!! Poor creature. Yet another example of racing's ruthlessness.

PS: I love your signature, Going4Gold. Makes a change to the ones you can hardly see.

Incredible, O2Y.

I wonder if you actually believe the nonsense that you spout.

That is rich coming from someone who thought a paper was lying when it published a story about healthy racehorses being slaughtered. You just can not admit that your "sport" is cruel and barbaric.

And yes I do believe that "nonsense". My partner has been an equine vet for twenty-eight years. I jolly well think he knows what he is talking about when he says the risk of both mother and foal dying rises astronomically when the mare is over sixteen-years-old. Then again you are probably going to say he is lying too, what with your almost three decades worth of veterinary knowledge and experience.

No, many mares go on to have foals in their twenties, but you wouldn't have a first foal at that age by choice.
Complications can happen at any age to be honest.
Just seen the rather ignorant comment further down about the mare should be enjoying her retirement at her age, what rubbish!
It all depends on how each individual horse ages, we have some here who look ancient at 15 and others of 34 who look about 6!
Would you like to advise me what age horses should retire then? (bearing in mind we have a retirement livery so do know a little about older horses!)
