Given that this is currently top of my short-list...

has anyone any experience of the Racemaster 3.5 tonne renault master coachbuilt conversions?

service? Box/chassis condition? problems? Good points?

thanks

Hello again!

The build is a bit funny and i thought felt slightly flimsy! The Guy is nice enough though. I was thinking about getting a new build from him but he gave us alot of spheel and i wasnt overly convinced about handing him a deposit... the story he told us didnt quite match up and i couldnt find anyone for references. The flap/door above the ramp is one long one rather than 2 and i wasnt too keen on that, also he didnt have any tack lockers or anything in it, oh and he uses a plasticky paper on the walls and a carpeted back that looked to me like it wouldnt wash down very well (and get hay stuck in it) so would look messy quickly. (im a bit anal about cleanliness and have to get every last bit of crap out the lorry when i clean it out... much like my horses bed!!!!).

I rang someone about a 2nd hand racemaster and they said that they wernt overly impressed with the chassis condition and had spent lots on it when they 1st bought it. If you like the racemaster build... (It really is a 'budget' build) and can put up with these little things then go for it im sure i was just overly precortious and now he is established by himself (rather than with highgrange) it should work out better for you.

Good points = they are cheap and you get to chose the colour of the box!!! They are also simple so you could prob sleep (albeit squished) in the back if really needed. They are light as so simple so give a good payload. The build is as wide as the cab so you maybe a bit easier to drive as you dont have to take the backs width into consideration.

Just get the chassis checked!!! LOL.

Hope this helps.

thanks

I spoke to the guy about a month ago and, like you, wasn't all that impressed with his speil. Also, I had a box about 4 years ago built by a bloke who trained with him and wasn't even remotely impressed with that box, either - the outer tie rings pinged off the first time the pony put his head down to eat and the saddle racks fell off at second use.

but I can't afford a Marlborough Hunter yet.

sigh

thanks for the info

Have you spoken to Polly at travel two? Also on her site she has a racemaster if you want to look at photos. She really is very helpful and often the 'good' boxes dont even get advertised on her site as they sell before she can advertise.

What is your budget? Do you want to go coachbuilt or van-conversion?

I'm supposed to be calling Polly this evening - but got in too late, so will call her tomorrow. Want the Dereham that's on the site but think it's gone... she's OK about Racemasters, just 'functional' not pretty or with any of the bells and whistles.

I don't *need* coachbuilt - my pony is 13.2 - but if I'm ever going to take out friends from the yard I'll need something bigger than a van - they all have ex-racing Tbs....

so will talk to Polly tomorrow

thanks
