Racing - Behind The Scenes

Thanks for that link, have just watched part of it when they go to Lucinda Russells & Peter Scudamore yard. Its very interesting and the staff seem to have a good life there.

Hmm, The programme was all very nicey nicey . I was furious that to keep the tone of the programme the presenters "forgot" to mention/lied that the horse that fell at the final hurdle in the 1st race was fine, it was fatally injured. I stopped watching the programme after "the cover up" so maybe it was mentioned later in the programme? I am a racing fan and accept that racing is wonderful at it's best and hideous at it's worst. Programmes like this don't do racing any favours IMO as they give the general public a false impression of racing which then leads to the annual uproar about The Grand National. The GN course is being dummed down AGAIN and eventually will be just another NH course. To my mind you will NEVER stop fatalities when using horses for sport (horse fatally injured show jumping in Dumfries recently) and we should all accept this or just keep horses as pets and never ask them to do anything but eat and sleep! Of course everything possible should be done to reduce accidents but reality should be faced.

I only put the link up for the behind the scenes footage. I haven't actually watched the whole program as I was up at the races working thus I had no interest in anything other than the yard based stuff. I knew the horse died but I didn't know they had glossed over it.

What I do like is that the cameras actually got shots of the horses galloping round the fields having fun and that they included it in the final cut, out on the gallops, jumping, schooling, the yard staff laughing - gawd knows why as they had just lifted 8 of those bloomin Easyfix hurdles onto the round gallop - Easyfix - aye but HEAVY! Lol! The camera's had free access to the yard and it's staff. None of that was for done for show - except putting 1/4 sheets on in August and the staff interviews, everything else was just naturally how the day of the racing yard runs. The filming was done over 2 days - the first day was lovely sunshine, the second was pouring rain - typical Scotland :D

Thats all I watched and for the reasons you said, it was good to get an insight into the day to day running of a yard. I didnt watch the racing as the only race that interested me was the Scottish Champion Hurdle won by overturn and I watched that on the Racing Post site.

I really did appreciate the link, what trainer do you work for?.

SBN is good, he is at home still at the moment finishing off his walking work - why pay a fortune for someone else to do what you are more than capable of yourself? He should be back in for the next stage in the next few weeks. His 2 brother are doing well but they are bloomin useless in comparison.

One of the bays hooning around the field and the one doing the sticky jump over the hurdles is Do It For Dalkey - pretty much a full brother to SBN. Same father and DIFD mum is SBN's grand dam.

Do you do anything useful ie racing form.

I take offense at that! Of course I do useful things! Lol!

I work ride the horses but I am also a bit of a breeding geek so could tell you nearly every single horse in the yards pedigree for the last 4 years ... I really need to get out more!

Lol I was joking about being offended. I only have 1 horse at the moment, trying to steal a few more. My last 2 - one went to the sales after winning one and never being out of the top 4 all season, the other moved yards after winning 4 and being placed in 5 in the last 2 years. The only one I have left wins one or two a season and is placed for the most part but he is handicapped to the hilt just now and he will go pointing in the new year.

Ye I knew you were joking, sounds like a good job only 1 horse:D but Im sure you float and help others.

I was lucky enough a couple of years ago to go to Paul Nicholls to see Kauto Star and Denman which for me was a thrill of a lifetime, amazing setup and everyone very friendly. Kauto Star is my absolute hero and I worry myself sick every times he runs.

We now have a couple of Nicholls horses - Tchico Polos and TIto Bustillo. Should be interesting for this season. I'll nick another horse or 2 for the season but I get landed with all the clipping and racing so I rarely get time to ride more than one or two lots a day.

I remember them ,they didnt live up to their early promise, hope Lucinda can get a tune out of them.

Wonder if Lucinda will go to the sale and pick up some of Graham Wylies when they come up.

Not sure, knowing Lucinda she will defo be there looking anyway but I think it's safe to say that every single one of those horses will be thoroughly vetted before they go through the ring. We have Degas Art, she bought him out of a seller at Hexham a few months ago. We also have Santa's Son now, his owner has come back into the yard.

Santa went through the sale a year or so ago and his current owner bought him but kept him at JHJ's so now he no longer trains we have the wee beastie. He is lovely but he really isn't the bonniest or best put together of horses but he does the job, that's all you can ask.
