I have to write a sort of pre-dissertation for uni and I want to write about the supply chain of race horses from birth until their first race - like how many that are born to race actualy mak it onto the race track etc. I suspect that this percentage will be quite low by supply chain standards.
I know I can use the stud book to find all the horses born in a year, and if I choose a year early enough I can then look up race records to see how many actually started a race.
So, where do I find race records?
And also, I know that horses cannot race unless they are registered in the general studbook but some that are registered will never have been intended to race so will skew the results a little so does anyone know of any studs that may help me? I just want to know for a few years, how many foals they bred to race and how many made it to the track (and if possible why those that didn't, didn't).

And just to make it clear - I support racing and this is not a "look how many horses break etc etc...... racing should be banned" type thing.
It is purely a piece of research.

Thanks

You need to contact weatherbys, Thoroughbred Breeders Association and the British Horse Racing Board

Good luck and sounds a good dissertation

The task you are contemplating is huge, and is something that the industry itself hasnt managed to research fully yet.
Id look at narrowing it down a bit. Maybe how many out of the horses that go through the yearling sakes make it to the track?
Horses on the WNTR can race too.

Please will you post where I can get info on the yearling sales and the WNTR.
Thanks - I was wondering if there were ways to narrow it down more

I have contacted weatherbys and tattersalls but will also contact tb breeders ass. so thanks!!!

Try contacting a couple of the large stud farms near Newmarket to see if they have details for a 10year period say. I know this would only be a sample but i would be a heck of a lot easier than the Weatherbys / Tattersalls samples. John Marsh at Cheveley Park is quite an approachable chap and possibly the National Stud who have a number of boarders. Darley also do quite a bit education-wise so they may be able to help?

Thankyou!!

Where can I find horses race records? Is it weatherbys who keep these?
Thanks!
