Racing today

I’ve been at Wincanton today, my first time. Really nice course and you can get close to the action.

That’s a fab picture. I’ve been there but to a horse show not racing 😁. Actually just remembered I’m showing my age now Wincanton was the first racecourse ever went to see Desert Orchid race.

Got in late and missed most of it, what caused the delay at Haydock and who / how broke the fence at Ascot?

Jordan Gainsford had a bad fall at Haydock but apparently is on his way home from hospital now which is very good news. I don’t know about the Ascot fence only watched one race today

George Selwyn was there photographing and he asked this random bloke to mind his camera when whilst he went to the other side of the course and said random bloke walked off with top of the range camera kit never to be seen again. All time great racing photographer Ed Byrne was also there for The Daily Telegraph. At the time everybody knew who Desert Orchid was, however........ Ed sent a photo of the hurdle race for the inside page as it had been decided that Desert Orchid, assuming he won and he did, would grace the back page. The hurdle photo went first - inside pages set before the front and the back page (no digital cameras then), and the pic editor was waiting to set the pic on the back page which brought about the memorable phone call about when the effing photo of the effing flower was going to arrive on his effing desk so he could start setting the effing page.

Lovely memories. Was quite into racing when I was young as my parents knew the Pitmans and a few trainers and it was the days of Bula and Pendil but we didn’t go racing and I found it all a little bit confusing as to what stand was what where you could go, etc but so wanted to see Desert Orchid that we braved it. Next time we went racing, I think was Party Politics National. 😁

Ed took this very famous photo of Pendil through the wings, I think he was still working as a bus driver when he took this- he must be 90 now

I might not be remembering correctly but if I am Wincanton was where Mill House had his last run. He had a back operation, I assume for kissing spine and when he recovered went to Wincanton. I was there that day and was delighted to see him run as he was a favourite of mine. He was huge and very impressive. He duly won his race but I don't think he ever ran again.

That’s lovely. Just looked and says he was 18 hands.

That is brilliant, thank you for sharing. Wish they did plushy racehorses here - I'd have a Constitution Hill for a start (and could also pretend it was a plushy of mine as bay with very similar star!).

It was a race of all races-pity the incredible wonderful Romantic Warrior was beaten, I think he'd have won with a different ride. I watched the Forever Young cartoon - I think he lost the Kentucky Derby because he ran the wrong way round the track......! 😂

Booster Bob was bloody brilliant. We were watching him pick off the back markers after being 20 lengths behind and then he just shot into the frame and rocketed home. Amazing ride!
I laughed out loud at that, incredible! The TV people were also dumbfounded. Great for the trainer and owners. Never give up!
