Racing today

Ambiente was a little unruly up to the start and rather keen but he jumped well! If they can contain that enthusiasm, he will be fabulous. Sam gave him a great ride although I’m sure he is now trying to put his arms back in their sockets 😂

The reins are normally long and the horses aren’t in a contact at the end of the race so I don’t think it’s really going to cause much trouble. It’s a bit of fun.
Mick Fitz has just commented on the subject and repeated my view. The jockey is responsible for bringing the horse home safe not showboating to the crowds.

I’m just catching up with the racing. I’m absolutely amazed that Harry Skelton never gets a whip ban. He’s clever the way he hits the horse over arm (technically not allowed) but makes sure to keep his arm below the horizontal.
Soldier Reeves was proper beaten to win today.
I think the Skeltons are taking over from Martin Pipe. Yes your horse will win, you will get your training fees money’s worth, but you may not want to be too caring and ‘fluffy’.
Sean Bowen is a much, much better jockey imo. Just as strong but more through the body and legs than the whip hand.

Just watched the finish with Soldier and he was hit 5 times after the last jump, cant remember how many times theyre allowed? Missed that race as out, so only seen the finish clip on itv fb, so not sure if he administered any whip prior to this

I said I think during Panic Attack's win "how much whip".

Compared to Sean Bowen, on Wade Out when the horse wasn't really going, he just used his legs to pump him along, until the finish he didnt use his whip on him

Agree with your Martin Pipe comparison, it feels like Willie winning the trainers at the last day has almost made them more intense, I didnt used to mind them but feels like something has changed

I said when he did that aeroplane to OH that one of these days hes going to go splat. I know his balance is way better than us mere mortals, but hes also riding racing length, so if there's a trip he doesnt have his legs as an extra anchor. Like you say, hopefully no horse gets hurt due to it. He had stopped it for a while. If he wants to celebrate, surely the reins in one hand and an arm out/up would be perfectly sufficient?

Personally I like seeing jockeys giving them a pat but then im soft!

I will say the Skeltons staff are good at getting nosebands undone! Also their horses usually appear on the non racing agreement page

Luke Morris' whip technique on the flat is grim. Although I try to avoid the sand dross!

I really cant see why they wont just ban the whip, it's not the nicest thing at the end of a jumps race in heavy ground seeing them be used

It's fine for them to carry them, and use in the case of safety (e.g horse straying off a line) but for the sake of "encouragement" I dont feel it has a place. Hands and heels looks so much more palatable. If used for safety, then jockey reports to the stewards after to explain why and their explanation is checked against the video to confirm justified.

Just feels it would be a really easy step to take to help improve racings image

Would have liked ITV to have shown the ROR parade too, they showed a brief clip but only picked out a couple of them, would have been nice to have shown each of them and a brief snippet on what each of them is up to

One small mercy is theres no David Power jockeys cup to mention at any opportunity this year!

Is there anything about racing that you actually enjoy? You never comment except to criticise so maybe stop watching and find something you do enjoy?

The really classy jockeys would do as well without the whip. I can’t see it ever being banned, but the rules now generally are ok. I can’t watch Irish racing now as the apparently limitless battering looks awful. (I do know they have rules there really, like our old ones I think).
The banning over arm strikes was great, but Mr Skelton needs a word from the stewards.

Looking forward to watching the racing this afternoon and quite like the idea of having a couple of quid on to make it more interesting.
Anyone got anything they like the look of. I assume the ground is going to be quite a test.
Currently sitting in my van at a dog agility show in the pi##ing rain, questioning my life choices, with very bad internet connection.

Jumping between ITV and Sky Racing slightly worried that thought when watching advert for Sons hair treatment for baldness which warns contains Minoxidil - Minoxidil has been the source of horse positives racing and show jumping!

Lovely picture on page 44 of the print edition of this week's' H&H of 3 former NHenderson horses out hunting with the Ledbury.

Another Venture, Gold Present and Discours D'Un Roi all looking fab

Wonderful win by Grey Dawning.

The chestnut horse in the photo looks a real hunter type. I’d have loved Royal Paigille to hold on but fab second at 11 years old.[/QUOTE]

Amazing ride by Harry Skelton on Grey Dawning. I've rewatched it several times and to have the courage to wait and wait until the furlong pole is quite something. And then for the horse to put the race to bed in the space of 4 or 5 strides was impressive.
