Racing today

The way the horse went down should have been enough to have been pulled up

Townend looked very happy winning the national next day, he should have been in bits about golden dancer, but no , race rides in one of the toughest races no problem, no feelings that go deep enough to alter his plans

Good for Bob's owners for making absolutely the right call and saying how it would have been greedy for them to ask him to go again next season

Hewick's connections? The epitome of greedy and can see him being flogged again next season. He really brought that yard into the spotlight so how about thanking him now and sending him off to do some RoR or something

Bob Ollinger's retirement makes me wish so much that they would do the same for Edwardstone after his win last week.

Last year we went on a stable visit to Barbury to see one of my OldGold horses and Robert Thornton hosted for us (Alan King was elsewhere). Edwardstone was ridden for us alongside 3 or 4 of the other horses there. RT obviously loves Edwardstone and takes him hacking every weekend.

Agree, sounds like they want to continue with Edwardstone next season just because he enjoys going up the gallops. There's so many things he can do in retirement it doesnt just mean a field! Maybe he will love them too, if he likes hacking with RT, find him a hacking home with him/someone. I absolutely love Bryony Frosts videos of Frodon and Black Corton and their incredible hacking, how id love to be on one of them and I dont even ride anymore! Looks like Frodon does showing too, as when he's parading hes in a double bridle and showing type kit so a truly varied life
Also would he have won if the race hadn't unfolded how it did

Just a thought here... bear with me.

Two top class horses at the end of their fabulous high profile careers. One 11, one 12. Both trained by the same trainer, different owners, but both owned by 'big guys' in racehorse ownership.
The decision is taken to enter both in one last Grade 1 outing at a prestigious festival, and retire them immediately afterwards.
One horse tragically dies after pulling up after the finish in his last race, the other wins.

One set of owners is applauded for rolling the dice one last time, the other castigated.

As far as I can see the only difference between the two sets of circumstances is that we knew about Envoi Allen's imminent retirement before the race, and we didn't know about Bob Olinger's until afterwards.
It's very interesting how people have reacted differently to the timings of the two different announcements. I suspect, going forward, that the lesson will be 'don't tell anyone until after'.

I have no appetite for re-opening the Envoi Allen debate in any shape or form, so if you feel inclined to comment I would be very grateful if we could consider that particular argument put to bed for now. However any discussion pertinent to my comments in this post is absolutely welcome.

You would need to reopen the Envoi Allen debate to get a fair answer 🤷‍♀️.

Was Envoi Allen still at the top of his game when raced in his last race, or was he already in decline?

Did he stand a realistic chance of winning that race?

I have been waiting for you to comment on the situation, Thankyou for your sensible well written post…I agree with every word…

Racing wouldn’t have the highs without sometimes having the lows, the same as any emotive subject and sadly sometimes the lows are a disaster for the horses and people involved. It comes down to fate really, one horse won and went off to glorious retirement and the other didn’t go home. No one knew that would be the outcome beforehand.

Do we think Lossiemouth is going to win the Champion Hurdle at Punchestown this evening?

I’d be surprised if she lost but I’ve had a little e/w bet on Golden Ace who had first time cheekpieces on today.

I’d be amazed if she didn’t win, she’s some horse.
