My friesian is off for a radio active bone scan next week at Rossdales, Newmarket. :(

Had nerve blocks today with out any changes so this is the next step. He's been lame since Easter and had bute and all the usual farrier checks, pom a neck or shoulder issue, left side of his chest not as well developed as the other

Has anyone else had this procedure?

One of mine has. Bi-literally lame behind, so had the scan to confirm suspected sacroiliac problems.
They just look for uptake of the injected radioactiveness in specific areas ; these areas usually being the cause of the problem.
Unfortunately, ponio is then radioactive & has to be shoved into a quarantine-type stable at the horsepital for 2 or 3 days and not handled at all :( They get over it though! :)
Good luck with yours. I hope u get some answers x

Doesn't do them any harm. When my horse was in horspital for three weeks I visited him every day and there were often horses that had tape around their stables because they'd had their bone scans. The grooms had to only use special mucking out tools for that particular animal and dispense of bedding in a particular pile away from the rest of the muck heap. Its just a precaution. Doesn't cause the horse any pain or discomfort.

I had my mare bone scanned last thursday and I couldn't then collect her until Saturday. She was absolutely fine, the girls go in very quickly to adjust rugs, other than that no mucking out is done for two days at Liphook. They are heavily sedated and come home with a bald patch where the drugs enter via a catheter, but she was very chilled when we went to collect her so I don't think she knew much about it. The results are available the day after the scan for your info.

Blue had his radioactive scan about a month ago after having various nerve blocks. Didn't pick up on the reason for his lameness, but the radioactivity didn't do him any harm. He stayed at Leahurst for 10 days in total whilst they redid all the nerve blocks they had done a month previously, but he was back to being non radioactive after a couple of days.
