You can listen to five radio programmes on Britain's native breeds (originally broadcast in Jan 2006):

Programme 1: Designed by Nature
16 January 2006 at 3.45pm

Dylan Winter begins his quest in the freezing cold and windswept heights of Exmoor in search of the "horsebeast" - the name originally given to the Exmoor pony.

Programme 2: Highlands and Islands
17 January 2006 at 3.45pm

As it has been for centuries, the Highland Pony is still used today to carry stags on its back down from the Scottish hills after a shoot.

Programme 3: On Fell and In Dale
18 January 2006 at 3.45pm

The hills and valleys of Cumbria are home to two native pony breeds - the Fell and the Dales.

The Fell and Dales pony are very similar in appearance, with only a matter of inches and a few features in difference between them.

Programme 4: Celtic Connections
19 January 2006 at 3.45pm

The Welsh Pony has more divisions in its stud book than any other native pony breed; four different types called the Section A, B, C and D.

Programme 5: Fit for the Future
20 January 2006 at 3.45pm

Britain's native pony breeds have lost much of their everyday use as working ponies, as a result of two centuries of rapid industrialisation across the landscape.

Native ponies are now mainly used for riding and leisure purposes.

I am utterly disgusted by your cruelty. Shetland ponies are not, as often suggested, 'condensed evil' nor does their small stature make them 'closer to hell'.
I have heard that flames don't touch them though, haven't you?

I think that's very short sighted, JM07. Shetlands have many uses (if the taxidermist has called) for example; door stops, pillows, rocking horses (ok, you need castors), rugs (not much stuffing needed there)....
All things you wouldn't use a NF for, I'm sure you agree.
And, if you hate your children, you can use them to teach rising trot.

A.van%20de%20Kamp%20team1.jpg

Dutch international carriage driver, Aart Van Der Kamp with his team of dutch-bred Shetlands. He usually beats every other pony team on the marathon (cross-country) phase of top international driving trials competitions. There legs arn't too long, but they can turn quickly and cut corners!
