The vet has just left....
He's declared Rage to be 'absolutely fine'

He spent ages poking, prodding and listening to every part of him. His heart (at rest) is normal, and he did a neurological/wobblers asessment which threw nothing up either. I actually got bonus points for having a horses that is super flexible *polishes halo*

He's running bloods to check that everything is normal there, apparently one of the things to cause collapse like Rage suffered is decreased liver function, and the collapse occurs as a result of the toxins hitting the brain.

The other thing he thought might be applicable to Rage was a heart arrythmia during exercise/excitement. The next step (once the bloods are back) is to fit him with an ECG and heart rate monitor so we can see how his heart is working while he's being exercised.
He completely discarded any girthing theory.

So... waiting on bloods tomorrow

We'll see what the bloods bring...
Am hoping that there is a definite 'something' that we can treat or will at least explain why it happened.
I'd hate for it to be unexplainable and to have to put it down as 'one of those things'.

The other thing the vet said was that it was very unlikely to be narcolepsy. He owns a narcolepsic horse himself, so I'll trust him on that one!

So you are none the wiser

Fingers crossed the bloods throw up something straightforward; I can understand you being keen to find SOMETHING to attribute it to and I just hope that something is something simple.

I've had 2 ponies that have gone down

William (12hh first pony) reared over and had a fit got up afterward and was almost normal after a few mins... had blood tests and had problem with liver etc like what you said above, we treated him and rested etc and even started riding him again but after a few months had 3 fits in the week so we never rode him again and he was turned out for rest of life.

second pony Tomas (12hh pony) had drippy/messy eyes that I had to wash everyday he did not like it and sometime i had to sit on him a bit to do it.... one day I man handled him turned his head tight to the side and he, all I can say fainted just went over on his side and fell I was OMG he is dead and then he just got up and was fine no fitting etc... spoke to the vet and he said you can trap something in the neck that can make them faint and they will just fall straight over.

I also had a pony the other week at a Pony Club rally that just did the same reined back and turn head to side and just fell over did not fit and got back up and was fine, the vet did tests and there was nothing wrong with it.

Glad to hear the vet's ruled out some serious problems. I hope they can find out what caused it. Very interesting but scary case and fingers crossed for a happy ending.

Update!

Bloods back completely normal

Am now under instruction to exercise him 'conservatively' for the time being, so no fast work, no road work and no riding alone, all in case he collapses again

We'll be checking his heart is functioning properly during serious exercise, though this is unlikely to be the problem as he wasn't 'exercising' when he went down on sunday.

We're also going to discuss further with the vets what other avenues we can investigate.....

So, no further forward whatsoever!
