Yet again this week turnout has been stopped. The fields are no more frozen than yesterday but 'no you can't turn out, you'll damage their joints' But being in wont send them mental oh no! A 6yo and 2yo that need daily turn out. I pay £615 a month for DIY on a yard that has 1 rubbish school, broken fences, crap lighting, dodgy gates, But amazing hacking, which tbh I'm not sure is worth the rest of the **** anymore.

How much? I would want them carried to the field on a purple cushion for that money.

My fields are really frozen this morning much more than yesterday (this is in Surrey) but aside from that surely on DIY it is down to you to make a judgement on whether or not they will damage their joints.

I cannot understand banning you from turning out when frozen? Not in DIY at your own risk, when you are doing hte turning out. Is when land wont be so damaged!

£307PCM per horse DIY without bedding / hay? Seems a lot.

I know YO are supposed to have sort of duty of care...but is it really their business if you want to take the risk? Would they forbid you from hacking out as the ground will be hard and you'll damage the joints?

I'd be looking for a new yard

Why is the YO so concerned with your horses joints?? my horses have all gone out today, they are settled down eating no running about so no risk to their joints, or any other part of them, keeping them shut in for days on end, or even the odd day usually means they fool around more and the risk to them and the field damage is far greater.

You are paying a premium rate, you could have part livery here for that price.

Well wish someone had told my 23 yr old and companion pony to me careful of their joints this morning - they had a right hooley for about 20 mins - then stood looking at me as their water trough had re frozen and they needed a drink (I'd only bashed the ice in about half an hour before!).

You are paying a lot - when I was on part I was paying much more than that - bedding and feed included.
YO's prerogative I suppose - there's always compromises when on someone else's land - think you either accept it or move.

^^ This.

YO's so concerned about the joints, but IMO there's greater risk with them standing in 23 hours a day for a week or so (providing your allowed to turn out into arena or riding/walking them), and THEN turning them out into a field and being hooligans.

Its your horse it should be your decision if you turn out or not.

Blimey... is your yard at Buckingham Palace?

I pay £160 a month which included t/o and b/i daily. Hay, bedding etc are extra and we have 2 schools and off road hacking on the doorstep.

Anyway I digress. We have had our t/o restrcited a bit recently as we don't have much t/o and it's a bit boggy, but my yard suddently seems like heaven. I'm never moaning agin (well at least until the next time :-) )

Beats deep mud in my opinion, I turned my two out with plenty of hay and they had a hoolie round with no problems

But at the end of the day rightly or wrongly its not your choice. If people feel strongly then I suppose they will vote with their feet - perhaps a few of you could get together and rent somewhere privately?

I would tot up what you get for the money, for two horses (though didn't you have three till recently?) I would think that a lot of money, I would imagine there would be more covered than just DIY for that.

Think I would be raging too. I keep my horses at home so can make decisions on turn out - they go out every day. Turned mine out as usual this morning and as they go out every day they just mooched off. As you know, keeping horses in and then turning them out after a period of box rest is when they will go for a hooley.

For that money and limitations I would be looking for another yard.

So do they stop turnout in summer as well when the ground is baked hard? I can understand not wanting paddocks cut up, but you have to be willing to go with this to move to that yard, if you want daily turnout (which btw I totally go with you on that), move. There must be other places with reasonable hacking and a more sensible attitude?

I am very careful with the ground Kali works on due to his issues (navicular, some arthritis and a previous suspensory injury) but he went out today . . . yes, the field is frozen on top but, as he proved to me when he hooley'd off to be with his friends, there is still some cut in it and it won't do him any harm.

Honestly? Move.

Ha! I see people write *spits tea on keyboard* quite often, but I actually just did!

I'm looking for somewhere to move to, and looking to move the 3yo somewhere more suitable to handle him too. Just to add, Little B and W just mooch around and eat with daily turnout, which YO knows.

This is ridiculous! Mine live out 24/7 and the last 3 days there has been snow in the frozen ground. I can confirm in those the days, no harm has come to either pony.

You sure they're not being kept in by the YO because she's getting lots of ££££ for the hay and bedding your all using?

Either that or the land is overstocked?

Having lost one from being turned out on frozen ground I am very wary, my youngster lives out so there isnt a sudden lets gallop off moment.

My older girl who is on livery, will be kept in till lunch then turned out when there is a slight cut in the ground.

I would say move as thats shocking price, but I would always rather err on side of caution so i still have a horse alive tomorrow.

Our horses NEVER stay in and I truly mean NEVER! We have sacrifice paddocks we use all winter, when grass has gone I feed hay in the field at no extra charge and my liveries only pay £115 pcm. Fab facilities and great hacking so I'm sorry but doesn't sound like your getting a great deal. I am usually on yo side but frankly, I'm at a loss as to why frost is any reason for turning out?

£205 is still a lot of money for DIY! £150/60 a month around most parts of the country. Was it you who said you were having some troubles financially? Sorry if it wasn't but still, move, plenty of other places about and probably a damn site cheaper.
