Raging!

Ours go out everyday no matter what the weather - YO actually requests that everyone is out for 10am and stays out for at least 5 hours. I would be looking around for another yard - it seems very expensive for DIY...

If the fields are hard AND rutty then I wouldn't be keen to turn out. Hard and level or soft would be fine. If a diy livery really wanted to then I wouldn't stop them but I might wince.
I'm not a pansy by any means, used to managing significant numbers of horses wintering out on Scottish hills, but turning a stabled horse our onto a hard rutted paddock would concern me.

I love ice and snow, it's one ofthe only times mine go out daily in winter as it doesn't churn up or give them mud rash!

The only thing that would stop me turning out in frost would be if the walk to the field was icy and dangerous.

I can understand yards restricting turnout for one reason or another, it's their land at the end of the day, but they need to provide some hardstanding turnout. It's not expensive to do and would solve all their problems.

All 5 of mine have lived out thus far this winter. First time ever but it had been so mild I figured I would see how they all fared and they are all very happy. Yes I have mud, but they all get well fed and have shelter. Far better for old and young joints to be moving.

Mine stayed in on Tuesday, only because the yard was so iced over that the dogs fell over when we went round! Other than obvious danger like that they are out every day come hail rain or shine! Field was frozen, is an absolute quagmire now but they still go out , roll ( arghhhh) then tend to stand and eat the hay. To be fair they are in the ' winter' field which gets totally trashed then rested all summer. They would be absolute lunatics if they were in for any longer than a day and I wouldn't want to be the one walking them down the lane to the field.
For the amount you pay I would expect to turn out in any weather if I wanted to.

I have mine at home, rent a field and barn from the farmer, field very very wet, £200 per month for four horses, my older ones get sick of the mud and want in, the younger ones happy out, but I do have to hand graze them every day as sheep were on the field, this is our first winter here and we will be more organised for next winter
