This is our first spring and summer on our grazing and there are loads of little ragwort rosettes coming through in my summer field - way too many to dig out. Therefore before I move the ponies into the summer field I want to spray the ragwort. What is the best spray to use and how long should I wait before the horses can go in the field?

Thanks soooo much

:-)

A mix of agritox and depitox works well - you're contractor will be able to get hold of them, from a chemical perspective they have to stay off for a couple of weeks (do check bottles/ ask contractor) but it's tastier when dead so realistically you have to wait for it all to rot away (realistically a couple of months)

What PM said - it is best to spray at the end of autumn to allow it to rot over the winter. Spraying in the spring will leave it to dry out over the summer and it is unlikely to rot. If you spray now, you are effectively wiping out the paddock for the rest of the year...

Unfortnately there is nothing as effective as digging and burning.

Grazon is quite a good all round weedkiller. Dockstar is good too - specifically aimed at docks but also works on ragwort, thistles and buttercups too

Barrier H is a very good spot on treatment and easy to apply. We managed to control 5 acres of the blooming stuff with it and can be bought direct from their website.

I believe you have to keep the horses off treated pasture for a min of 2 weeks, and remove any left over dead plants, but if just tiny rosettes should be ok to leave them.

I use barrier h as well. It's only or spot spraying as it kills everything it touches. It's very effective but if you have hundreds of plants it might be quicker to get the field sprayed. I found that Grazon doesn't kill it.

After looking into it I've decided to buy a ragfork and just spend the next however long digging the blasted plants up! Blooming ragwort wish it would just do one!

I used to dig it up but unless you get every bit of root it just grows back. I used to get four or five new plants growing around every hole where I had dug one out from. I used a ragfork and I also tried the fiskars weed pulling tool. The fiskars was the easiest to use, less back breaking. Thats why I spray now.

Hi, I now use a company called to Agrigem to work out what chemicals I need to kill the weeds in my paddocks. They have a really good thing on their website called a treatment selector where you just put in what weeds you want to control and if you are using a knapsack or a tractor sprayer and it will tell you which is the best product to use.
I'm lucky in that I don't have too much ragwort in my paddocks, so I can just spot spray and I use a product recommended by Agrigem called Braodshot and it works brilliantly.

We have four acres potentially ragwort infested and we spray with Thrust mixed with SolarPlus adjuvant in Spring (will do within the next four weeks) and again late Aug/Sept. We find it has to be done twice a year to keep on top of it . We're now in the twentieth year of this regime, although used to use agritox and depitox before Thrust arrived on the market. We'll never get rid of it as land around us is generally riddled and we're on sandy soil on which the stuff thrives. Just a case of keeping it in check unfortunately. Miss either a spring or autumn treatment and we know it.
We buy from Progreen (Google it). Active Ingredient: 344g/lt 2,4-D and 120g/lt Dicamba
