Ragwort!!

hello all again

Ragwort appears to be florishing in my pasture and its now at the point where digging it up is not making one but difference yet this time last year ( when I first aquired the field) there was maybe 5 plants there. It seems grazing has really made this field a raggy haven grrr!!!

I'm using SBK on it now. Did the first treatment on one paddock on sunday.. awaiting to see any results. Anyone can testify its greatness or anything else that really kicks raggy butt??

The reason digging it up does not make much difference is that if you leave any parts or filaments of the root in the soil it will regenerate to form a new ragwort plant.

Best practice is to spray the Ragwort and completely kill it (it might require two applications) and then pull it out and burn it.

I dont start spraying till april,weeds need to be actively growing and young, once ragwort gets a stem or flowers you wont kill it.
This warm weather might not last you could spray today and be under snow next day,that said you might get away with it but i would not chance it.
Spot spraying is a good method if you got a small area and you will need to leave till the ragwort has gone this can take upto three weeks, dont be tempted to pull up the dead looking plant as the chemical has to asorb to the root.
Very few chemical are effective on ragwort and might not be avaible unless you have a pesticide liecence.
Dont let it beat you can control it

Try googling 'Barrier H' - a natural weedkiller that is used on ragwort. I had a 5 acre crop of the stuff at our old house and this was the only product that worked, and didn't need any licence to buy it.

Digging it out is back breaking and can be counter productive if you don't get the whole roots.

I second Barrier H for spot treating -on a hot sunny day the plants will start going black within an hour, very satisfying. If you have a lot and want to use a broad leaf application over the whole field 'Thrust' is good, as is a mix of deppitox and agritox. Grazon 90is good too but don't use it if you use your muck for the garden. I killed my tomatoes off with it!

If you are grazing hard you will probably find that seeds from years past are being stimulated in addition to potential plants regrowing from left roots. Is frustrating but you can get on top of it.

Thanks guys!! I'm fed up of my friend who has lovely lush green clear pasture telling me I have ragwort everywhere.. I know I have it but I don't own a tractor that can plow it all up lol

Barrier H I will also look into then. I sprayed a paddock on Sunday with SBK and its defo making the dock wilt and the rag is slowly sinking into oblivion although I feel a 2nd application may be needed. I will try Barrier H on the other paddocks.

For others wondering
SBK works for docks 100% and seems to be for ragwort too.. Result

Another one for Barrier H. I spot spray spring and autumn (and occasionally in between) but although I keep on top of it I can never totally eradicate it. Been treating my 6 acres for twenty years now, from well before Barrier H was ever invented. Do read up about it first as certain times of it's growth cycle get a better 'take' than others, although it's a success at any time of the year.
