The sun didn't make much of an appearance but that didn't put a dampener on things (apart from setting off on a very wet Friday, with the M25 closed due to flooding).

I had some great tips on here, thank you, they really paid off, especially about allowing extra time for everything. Really pleased we did the training show on Friday. A great chance to see all the hullabaloo. Got some handy tips and changed our indiv show to allow for the set up of the arena. Left F all tucked in and went to crash at the local Premier Inn (I don't do camping!).

Day 2. An early morning call to tell me F was kicking up a fuss - he was worried no-one was going to feed him. Lesson learned, leave hay out for the morning and get there super early to feed. Joined by supergroom no. 1 for the 4 hour marathon of cleaning and preening. A bit fresh in the warm up but he settled after I actually started to ride and we did some proper working in. Eventful times though, with horses slipping over and one that decided it was all too much and laid down in the line up for about 10 minutes! All ok though.

Into the novice ridden horse, 12 in the class, mixed types. Amazingly, he went the best he's ever gone. What a great time to pull that out of the bag! We had some fab moments of being light, forward and into the contact, instead of the usual tense and choppy. Did a decent show and, for the first time, strip and trot up. V thankful again for the training show as the judge talked us through that. F does have slightly wonky front legs, bless him, but not much we can do about that! Judge commented how nice he went in a snaffle. So I liked her.

Had one of those fantastic moments when you can't stop smiling, as we stood in the line up and I thought "I'm at Hickstead!!". Would have been happy with that but to top it off, we got called in 3rd! Absolutely thrilled and so pleased he'd gone so well in a championship class. Not bad for our 4th ever show.

Another early night and even earlier start for Day 3, ridden hunter. Serious (non-novice) class this time, 21 entries. I was expecting to be massively outclassed (and we were). Pretty much everyone in a double, looking super smart. Class was too big for us to get into a rhythm, so we reverted to being a bit tense and choppy but he behaved perfectly. Not surprisingly we didn't get called into the top 10 line up. There were some cracking horses in there.

No indiv show, which I hadn't realised, but lawks a-lordy, the judge rode instead. Had not prepared for that! Unbelievably chuffed when she came back, thanked me and said how well schooled he was. A ride judge. At a championship show. About my horse!!! So I liked her. As if things weren't fabulous enough, got complimented on supergroom's plaits by the confo judge. I decided I liked her too.

Another cheesy grin moment of realisation that we were at Hickstead and that F was being a total superstar with all this new stuff. And an even bigger grin, with a comedy (but genuine) double-take, as we got bumped up the line and into the placings for an 8th place!! AAAAAAAMAZING. Ride judge said he gave her a really nice ride, which is what had brought him up the line.

My goals had been to get there in one piece, have fun, get some experience of a big show and, if he went nicely, *ideally* not to come last. What I hadn't banked on was my fabulous horse being a dude at his first major show. Plus supergroom turning out to a high standard. I tend to be critical of our slow progress and my rubbish riding but maybe, just maybe, we're doing ok.

Will add pro pics when they're ready.

Super report Bernster, your happiness is shining through and so it should. Your results are well earned, the horse is a credit to you. Well done, it will be HOYS and RIHS for you next year :D

Ahh, shucks, thanks all. You'll make me blush haha.

JB - so nice of you to say but, what with his bandy legs and a slightly creaky rider, I may have to content myself with pootling around the unaff classes !!

Am relieved showing is over though, not sure I could face all that hassle again for a while. Although I'm aiming to take him hunting a bit this season which means I'll keep him fairly trim and tidy until he gets some time off over winter.

I was in your ridden show hunter class, well done, you were fab! The class was huge and the standard was so high, lots of lovely gees in there! Well done!

Oh wow, small world haha. Great class, lots of lovely horses. Were you pleased with how it went? It thought it was a really good event and found everyone v helpful and friendly.

Yeah i thought it was really well run, really enjoyed it as never been to anything that big before! We did jumping, dressage and showing so experienced almost all of the disciplines and i have to say i was impressed with it all! Had 4fts in the 80cms but i lost a stirrup and panicked so we had one fence down but really pleased with how my boy went. Came 11th in the prelim dressage so just missed out on the placings by 0.18% so was gutted but again i couldnt fault my boy, the standard was just amazing! Had a better day on sunday, we won the newcomer working hunter and then came 10th in the ridden show hunter. We got pulled in 6th but we got put down the line after the judge rode as he wasnt as forward as he could have been and it clearly showed compared to the others in the class but i was still over the moon just to scrape getting in the placings! Overall had a really good time ( i did have my wheelbarrow stolen though!), got some lovely photos and can now say I've competed at Hickstead! Will you try and qualify for next year?

Wow that's a great set of results! Well done. Sounds like you had a fab time, you must be so pleased! I remember you, on the lovely chestnut I think, yes any rosette is def well worth it.

Yep, for me it was all about just being able to ride at Hickstead. How awesome is that?! Not thought about next year, I went this year as I could qualify for the newcomer class, and probably would have thought we wouldn't be good enough for an open class. But if he carries on going well, maybe I'll try again next year. Quite fancy having a crack at Chiltern and Thames champs too.

Would never have thought I'd ever be aiming for anything like these!!

Bummer about your barrow though, that's rotten but I imagine they were v sought after with all that lugging gear around. I kept all my stuff locked into the lorry, too many people and not v secure stable area.

I know, me too! We just do really local riding club stuff so cant believe it! They hold qualifiers for chiltern and thames at a place not too far from me but ive never really looked into it, might have to have a browse! Would like to qualify for trailblazers too so lots to focus on for next year. Where are you based as maybe i'll see you out and about sometime?

In Herts so CTR would be perfect as its just up the road! Have entered for wobble berries so will need to crack on with event prep next year too. Lots of fun stuff

What a fab report! Well done to both of you (and the supergrooms of course!)

Is the lady on the coloured cob having a happy sniffle?

Thanks. Yes, she is. Isn't it the sweetest thing?! Both riders on my left and right had a little happy sniffle. She nearly set me off. I also had a wobbly lip moment in the line up for the ridden hunter !
