I posted recently about my new boy having rain scald. I have tried treating it with hibiscrub (something which he did not appreciate and let me know it!) but it doesnt seem to be any better. What are peoples thoughts on clipping him to try and treat it better? He has similar to a trace clip atm but his rain scald is where his fluffy winter coat is.

Thanks in advance!

Mine was clipped, she had bad rain scald when i got her, they had been using baby oil and it was clearing it, im using mud fever ointment and its really helped,i think it really helped her being clipped

I've read people debates about whether its too late to clip or not. Do you think this matters when its a medical issue? Sorry probably a silly question but Im still on my steep learning curve lol

I'd definitely try and clip, it should really help clear it up. It's not too late to clip anyway yet. (I actually bought a horse last year who had been clipped in march - I was worried his coat wasn't going to come through very well, but it actually came through looking absolutely amazing!)

clipping is def the best answer- it will help it clear up so much quicker! It's never too late to clip! All mine are clipped till end of march/april and one is clipped all year round!

i have used had my called treated with hibi scrub once a day and neem oil so it soaks into the skin do not use cream or gels coz this gives the bacterica some where to breed if she has a rug on make sure she is not to hot coz this can cause it aswell after you wash it make sure it is dry!

This is exactly the same as my new boy, also has a trace clip he was covered in it all ver back and quarters as it was pussy as well I had the vet out to him who advised hibbiscrub make sure he is completly dry and then a steriod based cream for were the pussy scabs came off she also said once the bulk of the scabs come off and its more scurffy stuff I would be best to clip, The last big scab came off the other day so I will prob clip him. She also give me a course of bute so It shouldnt of been to painful for traeting it.

Absolutely agree with everything on here. Clip so the area is bare and treat with Hibiscrub. You need to really get down to the area which is very difficult when there is hair in the way.
