my old mare has yet again got rain scald. she is clipped and kept really clean. she has her rug off when warm and dry to prevent overheating. And she obviously has to have it on when its wet or cold.

My vet says its just because she is old and her defences are not working as they should. (35 in April!) I went to pick up some solution from the vets last night to put on the worse patchy areas but he also said to rag her with a solution... I just cant remember what it was! Its not hibiscrub... something else... Ill know when I hear it! Can anyone save me a phone call and suggest some solutions please!

Thanks :o

Not sure what your vet may have suggested, but I've found washing the affected area with Dandrazol (anti-dandruff shampoo for humans) has really worked for my horse. It's the active ingredient ketoconazole that you need to look for as it's anti fungal, I first saw it suggested on here.
My horse has had a bit of rain scald type scabs on his head and legs, and a couple of washes with this has pretty much cleared it up.

Botanica herbal wash vet gave me for rainscald as well anti bios because I can't shift it. I've spent hundreds on lotions and potions and sprays and god knows what else

My old mare got rainscald because of a low immune system. Malaseb and a course of antibiotics (which nearly killed her!) didn't shift it and in the end it was good old aloe vera gel and sunshine that did the trick.
