Is this possible? My pony has wintered out no rug. He has a moth eaten looking face! Also a few bald patches around ears and neck. No signs of lice no rain scald or scabs on his back but has a lot of coat to moult still. Never had sweet itch and is 15. Did rub his mane out one year about five years ago. Not rubbing it now. Appreciate any thoughts.

Could be mites or lice - a liquid or powder treatment is easy enough to apply, but gloves and doing it outside are recommended!

My elderly dun gelding gets very tatty looking at this time of year, but it's just how he sheds his coat. The first area affected is always his face, and then his neck. It had me really worried the first time! I bought him when he was fifteen, so I don't know whether he did it all his life, or if it's something that started due to age. Could this be what's going on with your pony?

Is this your Highland? Dermatophilus can be spread by flies onto the face, and if he’s still pretty hairy he might have that (my Fell does atm, he’s also shedding). We had a spell of mild weather with flies. Hibiscrub it and then use something like protocon, sudocrem or red horse ear balm (not just for ears, smells divine and less messy than protocon).

Yes it’s the highland. Thank you. Sounds like it is dermatophilus.

Are you in the habit of putting his headcollar through the washing machine? Same thing happened to friend's mare......then she put the fly sheet through the machine as well and it became very obvious that the soap powder was causing a reaction! She rinsed everything thoroughly, and slathered Sudocrem on the lesions, and it cleared up nicely.

Nope can’t be that. He has a leather one which he’s worn about four times since Xmas!
