Rain Scald

Don't wash! Smear generously (I really mean plaster!) with something like Protocon, zinc & castor oil ointment (same as babies have for nappy rash) Sudocrem, anything like that but probably not Vaseline as that's too sticky. Leave for a few days and repeat. As you apply more cream some of the old scabs should start peeling off but do not pick at them else you'll make pony sore. Repeat as necessary. By a week you should notice a difference and by a month it should all be gone. Also try to keep pony dry but don't allow it to sweat under a rug (this might have caused it to start with anyway)
It would be helped by a correct diet with some added oil too as it should heal from within.

Hi CeeJay. You will know that rainscald is caused by a bacteria that lives on your ned's skin. To clear it you need something that zaps bacteria and the easiest (and truly effective) way to do this is to buy a bottle of Hibiscrub. Boots or any pharmacy or good tack shop. You then need to carefully tease off all the scabs because the bacteria "hides" underneath these scabs. The scabs won't all come off at once. Ned would be climbing the walls! But bit by bit. You will be left with patches of bald, crusty skin. Make up a warm solution of Hibiscrub and wash gently in. Rinse carefully and dry. You will need to keep ned as dry as possible while you treat the rainscald. To tackle stubborn patches, or to speed things up, you can make up a cupful of Hibiscrub and work it into the affected area and just leave it there without rinsing. Couple of weeks tops...job done! Good luck!

I swear by sudocrem for rain scald, it works wonders after a week or so.

Thanks for all your suggestions, found among my lotions and potions a anti bacterial wash which seems to have improved the worse bits. Will now plaster him in sudocreme.

He is a little hairy shetland and I don't think has has ever worn a rug in his life! (he is only 5), and I believe has recently been living out 24/7. Due to my horse being a woose he will have to be in some of the day so this may help him to dry out!

Thanks again!
