Just had the vet up to do some routine vacc's and got him to have a look at where my lad has been itching and lost some hair. He has diagnosed it as rain scald. He has told me to wash affected areas in hibiscrub and leave on for 10 minutes. Is there anything else I can do? And is there anything I can do to prevent it from coming back?

Thanks in advance!

I would treat it the same as mud fever and rub some sudocrem on and rug up. I'm sure you will have others giving their help aswell

You can try rubbing some flower of sulphur in the area - it is excellent for skin problems and as a barrier - once the rain scald has cleared, you could use pig oil and sulphur mixed together.

The other alternative is once it has cleared is to rug to prevent it coming back.

Hibbiscrub is the best way I found to get rid of it, wash it twice a day but make sure its dried as best as poss afterwards it soon cleared it up on both our mares.

wash with hi bi scrub like vet said dry well and do that for a week then after dry apply neem oil thet will protect and sooth and the skin will absorb the oil and not stay on the surface and sweat like gels and creams do witch gives the bacteria something to thrive on!

Hibiscrub is the best for it (in my opinion, and most others by the look of it!)
if it looks sore, aloe vera gel or something is soothing (but won;t overly help the rain scald)
when u rug up, a cotton sheet under the rugs helps from sweat and moisture staying trapped on the skin........ but I guess it depends if u rug up or not!

When I first took on my old shettie, he had rainscald all down his back. All I did was massage it and used mane and tail conditioner to work his fluff into a smooth waterproof coat. In his case, his coat dries to rock-hard spikes after heavy rain and I guess because it wasn't groomed at the time, his skin became susceptible. I didn't use anything other than the conditioner, just massage. He's never had it since and that was 7 years ago!
