Ever since I've had her [6 years] my mare has developed a small patch of tiny scabs on her shoulder in the same place. This starts at the beginning of every summer so at first I thought it was fly bites - but I've gradually come to the conclusion it must be rain scald as it seems to be a bacterial type of thing similar to mud fever/cracked heels.

it develops when she starts staying out 24/7 without a rug then disappears when they go back to a winter routine.

I haven't spent a lot of time pondering it as the area was so tiny - I normally scrub off the scabs with hibiscrub and use purple spray and/or udder cream and it usually goes away. This year it seems persistant and hasn't gone away - plus she's developed 2 or 3 more little clumps under her elbow near the girth.

Anyone experienced anything similar? Any groovy remedy recommendations on treating it?

Considering a vet trip - would the vet give you anything radically more effective ?

I have a similar problem with my mare, she has small scabby areas on her back from rain scald, she had it really bad when I bought her and it's come back every year since. She also gets small areas under her elbow near her girth. I've found that the best 2 products are MSM cream or pink ointment. The MSM one by NAF seem to work really well and sticks well the the fur. I also find this cream useful for applying to her heels when out in the mud.

i found the best and cheapest way of clearing up rain scald is wash area in hibiscrub then cover with petroleum (sp) jelly as it sticks well to the coat and is totally waterproof and a huge pot only cost a couple of quid
