What a nightmare!

My horse has got rain scald. I've been brushing the dead skin cells off the patches and disinfecting it with dettol. He's now kept in a light weight turnout despite not being clipped and is a cob.

Any other ideas of how I can control it?

My friend recommended a mac type rug for £20 from countrywide but i can't find it online.

give the horse a wash in hibiscrub and pick all the scabs off, if you can then leave him naked with vaseline (white petrolum jelly) covering the area as it will let the affected areas breather without letting the rain get to it.
Only prob with putting a rug on is that if the bacterial is still there the warmth of the rug will help it breed, then you end up with a vicious circle

It is caused by the same bacteria as mudfever. best place to start is improving the horses immune system. This book is a good one.

The animal aromatics workbook - Caroline Ingraham

My horse suffered badly with mudfever but after treating him he has never had it again though his was also linked to photosensitivity so both angles were treated.

My yearling had it all over when I got her. All I did was stable her at night so she could dry off. I did give her Pink Powder too. It cleared up nicely with no other treatment.
