Hello

After noticing my horse was a bit bald in places and then noticing some scabs on her back I have taken some photos and my vet has advised me that it is rain scald they have sold me some sweet itch liquid but after reading up about it on google I'm not to sure if it is a waste of money?

I understand I'm to shampoo the area leave for 10 min then try and get off the clumps of hardened hair then fully dry.
But then what is the best thing to apply?
I have read posts that say lisereine mouth wash (not sure how its spelt) mixed with conditioner and baby oil (equal parts) ??

I'm always unsure about using human stuff but I guess if its good enough for us!!

Thanks in advance

The bacteria for rain scald live under the scabs (theyre anaerobic).
Therfore you need to pick the scabs off (shampoos help if theyre hard).
Ive heard washing with hibiscrub afterwards works to kill someof the bacteria left behind

Wash with hibiscrub then gently get the scabs off, you may have to do it a few times the horse will be really sensitive so be carefull, it is really hard to get rid as the bacteria it will live in the rugs and brushes and anything that touches the horse so you have to clean everything so you dont bring it back, my horse got it a few years back in the summer a few in the field had it as they can pass it to each other, someone also told me to use daktarin athletes foot spray between washes on the dry coat it did help clear it up. Its never come back since but I have moved yards now and I know horses still there get it so it can return. I have never heard of using listerine would that not sting?

Another shampoo to use is malaseb can get it from the vet.

I'd use something like muddy marvel 3 step to treat it - removes the scabs gently, disinfects, then covers the area to protect it, and is quite waterproof compared to a lot of things. A friend used baby oil in the past to prevent, but you must be careful in sunny weather, as you can get sunburn due to the oil. I'm assuming it doesn't wear rugs - as much air to the area as poss will help too.
