Rain scald

You need to get them in and dry, I was recommended malaseb shampoo to gently bathe to loosen the scabs, don't pick them off. Dry the coat thoroughly and then while vet gave me steriod cream I chose to use aloe vera gel as much easier to apply as could be dabbed on and not rubbed in as pony was a bit sensitive when he was sore. I then chose to rug up after that as our winters are so damp now and he has such a thick coat if lots of mud gets in I didn't want him getting it again. But rug wisely as too thick rugs can create it a bit too if the horse gets too warm.

Like mud fever, preventing rain scald in first place is usually best approach if possible - are you using a rug, or able to provide shelter from worst of rain (field shelter/hedge, etc)?

To help, try washing off the areas with a medicated scrub or a good alternative (like Aloe Soap), drying well. Then use other good skin sprays & lotions (like Aloe Vera Spray & Gelly). Find is important though not to repeatedly wash area because it will only make the condition worse.

If is causing him/her any discomfort, always worth giving your vet a call for advice i'd suggest :)

I read a story about a herd of wild horse s that had been rounded up all with really bad rain scald they were fed a balancer and the rain scald healed ,we took on a rescue pony with rain scald so we gave her a balancer and it healed very quickly she a rug for the bad weather . I hope this helps

Can't recommend aloe vera gel enough, my old mare developed rain scald on her shoulder (not from being out in the wet but because her immune system was compromised) and aloe vera worked where hibi scrub/malaseb and anitbiotics all failed.
